MY03 WRX + PPP
#1
Just been out to fill up the WRX (in general its the only time the wife lets me drive it). Have used Optimax in the main but tonight decided to try ESSO SUL. Worked out the MPG - average just over 23 to the gallon over the last 250 miles, of which 100 miles was a trip to TSL and back on Saturday.
We have noticed that over the past few weeks that the fuel consumption has increased, we got as low as 18 MPG a couple of weeks ago (and no its not because of too much right foot - I know it should be!!).
The main things I notice about the way it drives are, it seems to have lost its performance edge and it doesn't seem to run so smooth at lower revs. In fact while stationary if you rev it to between 2000 & 2500 rpm it seems "out of balance" (difficult to describe).
Prior to PPP at 2500 miles we had no problems, after PPP we were vey pleased. It appears to be over about the 1000 miles or so that both myself and the wife think its not running at its best.
We took it to the dealer a month or so ago, they pluged in the select monitor, took it for a spin and pronounced it perfect.
Is it me, anyone got any ideas or similar experience ?
Should I get a second opinion from an independant dealer - TSL or similar ?
Cheers

Are you saying that it quite common for the engine to feel "out of balance" at 2000 - 2500rpm ?
Any ideas as to what it is ? I take it the dealer doesn't agree that a problem exists. Which dealer ?

Why don't try an ECU reset with empty fuel tank? Next, fill it up with the best available fuel near you (Optimax-Ultimate etc) and give it a blast to see how it drives!
It cost you nothing and may help you find what is wrong.

I have a WRX 03 with PPP which was fitted from new. My car is about two months old now and has done 5500 miles. I'm told it takes 7500 to 10000 to fully bed in the engine so I don't know if this makes a difference. Mine sometimes seesm to hesitate and accelerate a bit jerkily from about 2500 revs but it doesn't always do it. I just put it down to the fuel quality but it doesn't really bother me too much.
The only other thought is, could you have got used to the power? - mine certaily now feels slower than it did but when I drive my wifes car for a couple of days and then get back into the scoob I realise it's just me getting used to it - I think this is quite a common thing happened with all my fast motorbikes also.

P.S. I get between 20mpg and 28mpg and it makes a massive difference if you are doing shorter stop start journeys. I've never done a full tank on all local stuff so 18mpg doesn't suprise me.

Can you expand a little on the problem that Stan palmers fixed for you.
Also I feel the engine sound a little "tappety", but it appears to sound the same both sides of the engine !!
Am I paranoid ? I thinks its something to do with a car that cost £21k and I'm not sure its running correctly.
Many thanks

My STI7PPP if I run Optimax it was noticable that around 2500rpm ish cruising along, I was getting twitchy foot syndrome but it never occured when I ran std SUL!!!
I once tried a Foam intake filter but removed it due to Warranty issues. When it was in I could hear "Pulsating" in the induction during the 'twitching', it was audible now with a foam filter.
I was told the Boost controller is pulsating trying to balancing between on and off boost pressures and nothing to worry about. And I haven't

I think its just the weather! my 330i Bm felt different a little rough sometimes, but pulled like a trian in winter, and so does the scoob. Just as the weather closed in it started feeling a that touch rougher, keep thinking its no but no it deffinaty feels on the course side latley. trouble is it goes like stick at the moment as did the BM, so hold on until it get milder.
I know this sounds daft. but I've done around 50k each year for the last 15 years and whatever I drive it feels rougher in winter, and that includes bikes.
