Nice constructive answer there Ian. Is that the approach you adopt when you're buying a car?

Samb, there are no doubt a few version 5's around dressed to look like 6's, as the exterior differences aren't that great. However, there are still ways of telling.

Physically, the version 6 has an additional front chin spoiler extension (which the version 5 doesn't have) and a kick-up along the back edge of its rear spoiler (the version 5 has a flat aerofoil section).

The version 6 will only start when the clutch is depressed, while the 5 will start whether the clutch is down or not.

The VIN/applied model codes will be the ultimate key though. The version 5 type R will be a GC8F2DD, and the version 6 will be GC8G2DD.

Awww, Ian.

The back ones are clear smoked on both the 5 and 6. The fronts and side repeaters are orange as standard, again on both models, so if the ones on the car you're looking at are clear they're aftermarket.

BTW, if you're thinking of buying one of these cars, have you read up here on the "do's and don'ts"? It's always a good idea to know exactly what (and what not) to look for, so homework is your friend.

I also think the STI 6 rear spoiler is an inch higher, so bring a measuring tape with you

If a question is put on here from a person who does not know the answer at least they are asking.

Better to ask than to be dumb.

Can any say they everything there is to know about the impreza, i doubt it.

& dont forget the 6 costs more which you could view as unecessary & spend saved cash on upgrading a 5
