At the beer off at handsworth and set the remote engine start to carry on running and set alarm so engine was running but keys in my hand and car locked up and alarmed. Come out of shop old woman at the bus stop said to me 4 lads in a car just pulled up and tried to open door. They must have thought keys was in realised doors was locked and they drove off. Theiving Scum.

Yes it is illegal to have your car running and not be in it, as we found out at a local meet when the police turned up and 4 out of 6 of the cars were running whilst we all had a quick chat after a wee drive. Police were good about it and only gave the guys a warning but it is a £75 fine.

Only illegal if your car is on the public highway, so your driveway, garages and mot stations are not counted, from my own experience you can still get done by the police even if there is a passenger in the car and its running, i stopped outside a cash machine once in Derby city centre, left the car running with my missus in and a jobsworth copper decided to give me a lecture, producer and fixed penalty fine for leaving my car running.
If you leave your car running outside a shop without anyone in it, your asking for trouble, plus if it gets nicked with your keys in it your insurance won't pay up unless you had the keys nicked from you to start the car.

With regard to the law on leaving your car running with noone in it you are a wee shade wrong and I will tell you why.The Road Traffic act 1988 is quite clear that you are permitted to be outside your vehicle with the engine running so long as you are close enough to act should there be a mecanical failure or electrical malfunction. An example of this would be stopping beside a post box and hopping out to post a letter. You would obviously be close enough to act so be committing no offence. This legislation is open to some debate as the distance deemed reasonable has never been quantified but in the instance of an adult being in the passenger seat while the engine was running there would be no offense comitted. You talking about Scottish or English law??, i am talking from experience as i was done for it with a passenger in the car and the cash machine was only a pavement width away from the car, it was probably 10-12 years ago when it happened.
