OK guys, for those of you who have been showing an interest here's the outcome of my upgrade work on the westfield.

The engine is now running 1.8 BAR boost peak and drops and then holds 1.4 BAR. It is running on 803 dark green motorsport injectors, 3 BAR MAP sensor, -31 actuator and an Ahmed Bayjoo Pectel P8 ECU conversion.

The exhaust is a free flowing, repackable 2 5/8 inch decated system.

The fuel system is a twin pump arangement, it has an escort cosworth in tank pump acting as a lift pump into an external fuel swirl pot that feeds an external high flow/pressure competition pump. The fuel Presure regulator return feeds back into the swirl pot and there is then a return from the swirl pot to the fuel tank. This should give a degassed fuel system with no chance of fuel surge as the tank level drops.

This conversion gives between 340 and 360 BHP depending on exhaust spec etc. so an estimate of 350BHP is fair. This gives my car a power/weight ratio of 480BHP/tonne. The only car in the EVO listing that is higher than this is a McLaren F1. A ferrari F40 gives 440BHP/tonne as a reference. Both these cars are much higher geared than mine with over 200MPH gearing. My westfield is geared for 175MPH so the acceleration should be higher on the westfield upto the point where the poor aerodynamics takes over.

I have just done some very basic testing for acceleration times after setting the boost up. The numbers are a speedo indicated figure so might not be totally acurate but gives a good feel for the performance.

I get 0-60 in 3 seconds and 0-100 in 8 seconds. I have not hit the top speed as yet, but have had if off the clock at 150MPH and still pulling strong, the brick wall i was hitting at 130MPH at snetterton has definately been knocked down.

The above figures are traction limited, it is very difficult to not have wheelspin in 1st and 2nd gear, even with my super sticky Avon's fitted. The avons are definately a huge step forward over the yokohama's, it is very much easier to control the 3rd gear power slides with these fitted and has much higher grip levels on the front in particular.

By tomorow night i will have the uprated suspension in place and setup so cadwel park will be very interesting to see how the handling/grip levels have improved since snetterton.

I think 350BHP is enough for me in the westfield as any more starts to get very expensive if a proper job is going to be done. The chassis is definately up to 400BHP though. I think i will stick with 350BHP however, any more is just plain silly in a road going westfield.

(the above figures were obtained on private roads, not a public highway)

Ok, flame on...

Surely the lighter your car gets the more effect the driver's weight has on the acceleration (and _real_ p:w ratio)? Thus I'm pretty sure a roller skate with a briggs and stratton (sp?) is unlikely to out accelerate much when you sit on it??

Does the power:weight ratio take into account a driver?

OK robman, seem as though you are being a boring sod here are the figures with the driver.

440BHP/tonne

Thats the same as an F40 without a driver. and my figures include all the wet weather gear and 20 litres of fuel.

Happy now?

When accelerating, does your face pull back so hard that you are constantly doing a chelsea smile?

John, does that include the weight of the parachute? Are you sure the grin on your face isn't the effects of the g-force?

yep, still doing cadwell on thursday.

I have done an awefull lot of work on the car to date. It had lots of small faults i have been sorting and was about 220BHP when i bought it.

I had it at 275BHP the day after and have done a huge amount to sort the fueling system to cope with 350BHP.

The tyres are a completely different spec now, silly things like leaking rad caps and water pipes are sorted. New engine mounts as the old ones had melted! new actuator mounting. De cated exhaust system etc etc.

I havent been out of the garage for weeks except to drive it on track at donnington twice and snetterton once.

Oh, nearly forgot, i have changed the front brakes from 240mm capri brakes to wilwood 4 pot calipers on 285mm disks.

I am sure there is a lot more but i am buggered if i can remember it all.

needless to say it is now an awesome car for the road, should be quite quick on track aswell.

stef, it will be a pleasure mate.

Why first? Dont ya think it will last more than one run?

Havent got the suspension upgrade on as i dropped a bollock on the spring diameter so it still rolls a bit more than i would like. I am not at all impressed with the wilwood brake pads so hope to get some performance friction pads for cadwell. They are perfectly safe as they are and dont fade but there is no bite to them at all.

I have done 85 miles today playing on some great country roads and the tyres once hot are just awesome, its just so easy to drift it on the throttle in 3rd and 4th gear, very progresive.

I am sure i am now getting a bit or torque steer from the rear suspension bushes flexing under power so i think the next step is some new bushes and rose joints.

Am i ever happy? Am i f**k LOL

cya all at cadwell

John,

Looks like not much on the road will keep up with your westfield.

I wonder if a certain MG 6R4 could be made road legal... hum... twin turbo, four wheel drive, ~8 hundred bhp or so, around 700kg, what's that, ~1000bhp/ton. Nice.

Moray, that 6R4 would be serious fun on the road, its still a girls car though, AWD you know. LOL

Simon, has he had it on the road yet or is he still terryfied of it? LOL

Its because i missed that cossie so much i bought the westfield, its one of the best genuine 350BHP 2WD sapphires you will ever see, great car.

Sounds the dogs doofers, any piccies of the beast.

Thinking of comparable cars, what about the Ultima GTR £40,000.00, 0-60 in sub 3.5 secs and in looks like an old school Le man racer, nice. Wonder if that could be the only thing that could open a can of whoop *** on you.

Enjoy Thursday.

I considered an Ultima as they are the dogs danglies but i am just to damn poor to have a proper one.

I cant see an ultima keeping up on the country roads near where i live though, its just too wide. It would also need to be running at least 500BHP to keep up on acceleration.

Some piccies of the westfield can be found on

I think Neil has just about overcome his fears

He spends almost as much time driving it now as he does polishing the engine bay

OK guys, i can now officially proclaim my car IS an animal, its a dairy cow (see below). LOL

I am well chuffed with the way it performed at cadwell park on thursday. The performance improvement over previous days is just stagering.

The car is just such a pleasure to push hard through the corners now, and thats down about 80% to the tyres, they are just so progresive in the way they slide. I am running 7" front and 8" rear avon ACB10 Sport road legal slicks, they are a crossply race slick carcass but have a legal for the road (just) tread pattern. The front bite is now fantastic and this is letting me use the throttle very early in the corners and the extra power is allowing me to steer the car as much with the throttle as the steering wheel.

It is a real example of what racing drivers call having a balanced chassis, where the front and rear grip works together incredibly well, its more important to have this feel than it is to have ultimate grip that you cant exploit because the relationship between front and rear isnt there.

I am miles off exploiting the cars full potential at the moment, i still dont feel i am wringing its kneck fully, but my god is it fast.

There was only one car that passed me all day on track apart from my slowing down laps, that was a radical sports racer with slicks and wings, those things really fly.

My car was passing every other car on track, no other road legal car was close to the speed the westfield was getting, including EVO IV's, Scoobies, 350BHP escort and sapphire cossies on full slicks.

There were even some other westfields on track including a SEiGHT and i just anialated them, i passed the SEiGHT on park straight like it was going backwards, i realy enjoyed that.

I managed to take a few of the scooby crowd out for a run and they all seemed quite impressed (slight understatement).

I had a problem with the turbo water cooling pipe failing again whilst mossman was a passenger, this caused engine water/antifreeze to spray onto my rear tyres and i spun off at park corner doing about 80MPH, i had a cracking power slide on untill it just spun instantly, thought i had been a to$$er until i got it back to the pits and saw water all over the car and my turbo looked like a kettle. Good job mossman took his pampers with him. LOL

I was buggered if that was going to stop my fun so i did a bit of an ingenious engineering (bodge ) fix and bypassed the turbo water cooling so i could keep running. If the turbo blew, so what, its only money (thats how daft i can get about driving my car) and i didnt want to let down people i had promised a ride.

So i ran all afternoon with no cooling to the turbo bearing housing, i noticed the oil temp go higher but nothing to worry about. I need to fit an oil cooler now and a better baffled sump as the cornering forces are pretty high, once i start to really push the car it would cause oil starvation problems i am sure, so i will fix that before it happens.

Neil who bought my old 350BHP cossie turned up in the afternoon in the car and it is looking in mint condition, i do love that car, its one of the best around, i spent an enormouse amount of time getting it sorted, neil has got it looking mint now, very nice to see again (still miss it ).

I took neil out in the westfield and he was just dumbstruck at first, as a driver it feels spectacular, it must be quite amazing as a passenger.

My last run was with stef in the car and i gave it quite a quick few laps. I did a 1 min 45 sec lap with stef onboard. I think one up after learning the car more a 1 min 40 is possible, now that is quick for a car on road tyres.

Thanks to all who turned up and made the day so enjoyable, especialy mark from tyres northampton for struggling to fit my new tyre, they are a real bitch to fit being a proper racing tyre carcass.

For all those who were there, my car wants to say hello, "moooooooooooooo".

When ian posts some piccies up you will get that one.

Heres to the next track day, i might have learned to drive it by then

Top day on Thursday at Cadwell. Great to see Stef, Mark of Northampton Tyres and of course John "Flymo/Moo!!!!!" Felstead.

Apparently the water to the turbo went when we span off. I didn't see any of this

Pampers were very useful and I did drop a cog just coming out of the pit/paddock! (gugger me!).

Until next time!

Richard, it will be a pleasure to give you a run out in the westie, but you must surely know by now that if "She" is around, everyone else gets second pickings.

You would definately be my second passenger though. Anyone who is crazy enough to let me drive there 22B on track deserves to be treated like royalty. (off with there heads)

John,

Awesome car mate and you are too modest about your driving ! Stef and Mossman summed it up about right.

Watching you disappear into the distance through Mountain to Hall and through Gooseneck you can really see (if not for long !!)what a well balanced car it is .

Thanks for the ride, John

ps you could do with a bit more power

DocJoc, i was thinking that myself. Now, where's my spare T4 RS500 turbo gone. Only needs a slight mod to the bonnet (and a frontal labotomy)
