In preparation for the smacs tour of britain, I have been trying to find a decent map with a good border of each county on it, to no avail.
I work for Royal Mail for gods sake! and I still can't find a good map.
So, does anyone have a good link to somewhere on the net I could get one, or know of a good atlas that has one in I could buy?
The plan is over this year, visit, in convoy, every county in england. I live in Stockport, Cheshire, so theres one for a start
Here's my list:
Cheshire
Lancashire
Derbyshire
Yorkshire
Nottinghamshire
Cumbria
Northumberland tyne and wear (2?)
Humberside
Lincolnshire
Staffordshire
Midlands?
Cambridgeshire
Oxfordshire
Norfolk
Suffolk
Herefordshire
Northamptonshire
Gloustershire
Buckinghamshire
Berkshire
Kent
Sussex
Surrey
Essex
London?
Dorset
Hampshire
Devon
Cornwall
Once I have a definate list, I only need to plan a route through the lot!!
Maybe not in one day though

cheers,
chris

And don't forget that the two biggest counties are now split into North, South, East and West Yorkshire, and North East Licolnshire, and North Lincolnshire as well as Lincolnshire proper.

Happy new year Chris, hope you had a good one just got in from work (Racecars). Still burning the midnight oil.
Just one point there is no such a county as Humberside any moore(thank God). It is East Yorkshire for north of the humber and Lincolnshire for south of the river.
So when do we start on our tour?

Orkney & Shetland may be difficult in convoy

Are you sticking strictly to 'Counties'?

If not it gets even more complicated

Just a warning, that map's a bit out of date! Cumbria was formed in, I think, 1975! I remember it, but was too small to remember the exact date! Rutland now exists again, but Yorkshire is divided. I think the Welsh counties have changed too.

thanks very much one and all for an excellent response
Now I have the info I need, I only need to plan a few routes out.
The smacs will have to have a sit down, and decide how long this should take us andy, could we do this in a week do you think?
and make it a scooby tour of britain, meeting up in different counties each evening?

I can see this growing much like the NBO did for Lordharding

Cool

Have a look at the link above for the 'administrative areas' which are not 'counties' as such

Question

meeting up in different counties each evening
You need some criteria for each county to qualify, do you need to just drive through it or stop and get a pic of the sign or what?

You need to read all that gumph in The Gazeteer. That map shown is what they call "historic counties". The UK government seems to keep re-arranging the administrative areas (hence Greater Manchester, Greater London, Cumbria, West Yorkshire etc). The last such re-arrangement was under the Lieutenancies Act 1997, so you need that list for Administrative areas. Whether each of those has a county council I do not know!! London doesn't (unless you include the GLA)....

Yep, you are right there, the map is the historic 'County' map which ignores the administrative areas such as Greater Manchester etc. See the Gazeteer for all the info you need, and a fair bit more!

Chris, yep, I/We would be up for some of it for sure

You need to define exactly what you want to visit, is it each county, or each admininstrative area? Are you gonna do it as a sponsored event for 'charity' in one go? Or do you wanna plan a series of interesting routes which take in the best roads in each county?

Have a think and let us know

just thinking about this guys, and its turning into a many headed monster!
this will be quite an undertaking this year, but I deffo want to do it.
I think the format should be "a bit at a time" rather than "all in one go", as I simply dont have the time or holidays to do it all in one big rush.
I want to stick the the "countys" of england for now, although it would be possible to do wales in a day!
As for charity, I'm not sure, I've always been of the opinion that as soon as you start asking people for money to do something you enjoy, there is a bit of resentment involved, + the hassle of collecting any money owed. So, I think I will keep it personal, and just enjoy it.
Certainly the northern part of the run could be done on my trip up to see the cumbrian scoobs in a few weeks, taking in: manchester, lancs, cumbria, northumberland, durham and even lincs and some of the yorkshires, and finally derbyshire, staffs and cheshire.
Then it would leave the midlands, the south east, and by far the hardest part, the south west, cornwall and devon.
I think it would be nice to meet up with local groups in each area, plan a great route taking in some of the best roads in that county, and driving into the next county. That was my original vision, driving through all the countys on the best roads that it has to offer.

Right, time to plan the first leg of my journey!!!!!

Sounds good to me

How about going to some of the places that locals up and down the country meet? Like the Wiggin Tree, Gunthorpe, Sharlow etc? and get in touch with all the regional 'routemiesters' to find out the best roads and arrange to meet up

If you want any help with Wales, Derbys, Notts & North Yorkshire I have a 'few' prepared already

although it would be possible to do wales in a day!
Having done it numerous times (Wales Camping Trip 1,2,3,4,5 & Muppet Camp II), it takes at least 2 days to do the whole of Wales There are some cracking roads though

I saw it

But I dont think most regions are as organised as you lot and the Cumbrian boys. Even the Midlands lot dont have a 'regional organizer' Steve777 does a bit, the Coventry lot do a bit more, as do the Worcester lot. Shouldnt take too much to sort out who are the main players

Perhaps post summat in the appropriate regional forums when you are planning each bit.

The South West is not too daunting, if you allow a weekend for it.

Did you mean to put 'Counties of Britain' not 'England'?

Wales: well there WILL be Wales Camping Trip 6 this year
