Question

What made you buy a Scooby ??

I never thought much of them until my mate took me out in his.. Ive had turbo's before & god never did they sit me in my seat like this... I though this is my next buy... Looked around for a while & spotted one in the auto trader with p/x avail... (RS2000) People always say
never buy the first one you see, theres always a better one ... etc etc
As yousuall they never offer you anything near what you want for your car, so I had to dig deeper in the bank, & have a car sitting on the drive for a while. I was just looking at it & all I could see was the white scooby saying 'BUY ME' & as quick as my hands could open my small empty wallet I had a deposite on it.. signed a reciept saying deposit payed & balance to follow & collection on Monday ... God I couldn't sleep, All I could do is show people my new buy.. A scooby on a piece of papper & a small piccy in the auto trader... It was the longest week while they got it ready for collection & 7 months on still

Your story's now

Cheers

It's a pretty short story, and probably a very common one. A mate of mine bought one (a PPP'd Terzo) and she took me out for a spin in it. Done deal. Hooked. Had to have one - and within a couple of years I did.

It's quite a step up from my 306 XSi (which I really enjoyed), but one I've never regretted. My bank manager probably regrets it for me, but that's another issue.

After having a few hot hatches I just thought it was time to get something a bit more grown up and still fast, didnt realise quite how good they were until I had it, but it still surprises me nearly 2 years on and looks set to do so for a while yet!

I have been into cars since i could walk,so it was inevitable that i would end up with one.i had had my eye on them for years but being a ford man i opted for an ST24.
Then about 6 weeks ago my next door neighbour(and good friend) came home in his newly purchased 99 wagon and knocked on my door and said hop in i'll take you round the block in it within 2 weeks i had a wagon sat on my drive!!!!!!!!!!!

Test drove a WRX at a friend's back in April and was totally smitten .... 5 months later went from a 90bhp diesel scenic to 225 bhp WRX Wagon .. Had it 4 months and you still cant wipe the smile off my face!

Was driving a 91 GTi Celica but wanted something faster... originally looked at buying possibly a P928 or an Audi RS2, but both were horrific in terms of servicing costs, and the Porker was too wide for my driveway entrance.

Had always liked Imprezas since they appeared on the rally scene years back, and after discussing their merits with numerous people, opted for the one I have now (MY 97 Turbo).

Still love it as much as when I first saw it. A lot of people seem to be moving away from them for fear of being seen as being loutish. I don't care who drives them in general, I love mine and that's all the matters to me!

I just fancied a week-end toy - acquired a JDM WRX about 8 months ago and have put 12000 miles on it. So much for weekends only! Family car is a Mondingo 24v which is comfy, quiet, reasonably quick and, comparatively, economical. The Scoob is noisy, uncomfortable, rattles, heavy on Optimax and a worry to leave/park anywhere. My face still aches from grinning even 8 months later. Wouldn't change it for anything (nor the car)...

I was just browsing an Auto trader one week and didnt realise how much the classics had come down in price (pre-face lift ones). I had an Escort GTi which I spent ££££'s on and couldnt see an end to it all.

So I sold my 'scort and jumped into the Scooby, a car that I dont really need to spend anything on. Other than the obvious shares in Shell

at the time i was driving around in a 1800 opel manta shed whilst my baby, an i240 opel manta sat garaged, used two or three times a year, got a bit miffed paying a loan for a car i never used, hated driving the wifes escort around so tried a my97 impreza turbo with a view to replacing the escort in a year or two with one, picked it up a week later, scrapped the 1800 manta, vowed not to modify the scoob, first a back box, then a centre section and an air filter, then some 4 pots as the car was already a my00 lookalike so had 16's, then a downpipe, nearly a year later i sold the i240, tried a couple of evo 6's, bought some alcon brakes, just about to buy some superleggeras for the scoob when i thought about an rb5, tried one, nice drive, didnt feel any quicker than my decatted my97 and it was a bit rough, thought i would try the p1 demo whilst i was there, same story, picked it up a week later with the alcons fitted, decatted it the next day, some clear indicators and 18's, since changed that for a sti7 prodrive ppp

I have owned reasonably quick hot hatches in the past. The last of which got written off (Astra MK2 GTE 16v) just over 3 years ago. In an attempt to get a car quickly, I opted for a Mondeo Si Hatch. The car has served me well for 3 years, but I needed an estate car as I do loads of sports that need large amounts of gear.
I did the usual - searched for something with a bit of pace, comfort, style, (& aircon!). Not much out there. S4/6 were way too much money to buy, never mind sevicing. ST24 Mondeos look a bit **** in estae form unless you get an RSi. Then started looking at 2.5 TDi's (Omega's, A6's) and chipping them.
I had looked a Subaru Legacys, but their performance is pretty **** with poor economy. BUT.......a mate mentioned imports!
That was it - Went to see an imported MY96 Legacy GT-V Limited Edition Twin Turbo about 6 weeks ago and she is sitting outside now. Fits everything I want from a car and more - the fuel economy hurts a bit, but you can't have it all!

Had a Rover 220GTi that was **** and wanted to shift it fast. My local rover deal had just taken on Subaru and I saw a Legacy Turbo for sale. Wnert to look at it half heartedly, it looked a bit bland but by god did it drive well. The steering, power , noise everything was great so I bought it.

A couple of years later I was getting it serviced and was standing at the service desk and turned around to see a really nice sonic blue Impreza. I test drove it and loved it apart from the old style steering wheel so I bought a brand new car ( i know silly but I hated the old sterring wheel) with the trimming such as leather, sunroof, aircon.

I still love the car , the noise the handling, and really isn't much I don't like hence I've had it for 3.5 years. I know its not the best car in the world but it suits me fine.

I must say though that the Legacy was supreme value for money and I tried to buy that back off the dealer !

Cool

Had a modified 300ZX and a mate bought a WRX STi. Had a go in that and it was so much better than my medalion Man car. It steered / stopped / handled and out manouvered the 300ZX . I had to have one. a year later on, I had my own.

Cool

I treated the G/F (and me of course) to a day at Rallydrive for her birthday. I knew within 10 seconds what my next car would be. Houses and income have got in the way a little but I should be joining the club in the spring with a lovely black MY03 WRX PPP.

This was my first ever thread on scoobynet, and I've reproduced it here, hopefully for your enjoyment. I've had the car ten months now, without mishap.

Back in 1996 I didn't even know Subarus existed. I was vaguely aware of the existence of cars, but not in any involved sense as I couldn't even drive, though I was in my thirties. At the time I'd just joined a band of thirtysomethings called the Po' boys that had the (dubious!) honour of having a British Superbike champion occupying the drum stool- one James Whitham of the Huddersfield Parish. At that time he was going through chemotherapy for non-Hodgkins' lymphoma and had lost all his hair, even his pubes which he would grab handfuls of between songs and sprinkle dolefully onto his snare drum skin. It used to drive him wild when people in the audience used to shout out "Let's have a look at the scores, George Dawes!" though the resemblance was undeniable. He bought a 96P Impreza turbo in reddish blue (laughable colour description, must have lost something in translation- like Japanese instruction manuals), gold wheels etc. The now iconic image of the breed. Even with my lack of interest in cars I knew I'd never seen anything like it on the road before.
He took Jep, the singer, for a quick spin and I was shocked at the sheer obscene bellow coming from the exhaust and the rapidity of its acceleration. I must have led a sheltered life because I had no idea that cars like this were available for everyday use. As a mature student at the time and with no licence, the prospect of owning one was about as likely as a trip in the space shuttle. But that didn't matter. I was hooked. As surely and as securely as anyone could be. So I learned to drive.
James sold his about a year or so later for what he paid for it, the spawny get, but I still hankered for one. Evidently, James's girlfriend Andrea (now wife) resented the fact that he'd sold it on because as soon has she became independently flush she bought one for herself- a 99V, high rear spoiler, mica blue. Gorgeous. So there it was. Another one, close by, stinging my insides with envy every time I saw it! So I'd passed my test, gone from a 1.6 Vauxhall Belmont to a 1.8 Cavalier to a 2.0 16v Cavalier. At one of the gigs I talked to Andrea about her Impreza and she said "I'd really like a clk... or a Porsche". I was flabbergasted. I was annoyed! I was absolutely livid that she could sit there owning something that I thought I could never have and wanting something else and I told her so! It wasn't her fault of course, but that didn't alter the sense of injustice I felt.
At about this time the lads all got tickets to see the Who, all except myself who couldn't be ar*ed, and as usual they were running late. They were going to miss the gig if they didn't do something drastic. The something drastic turned up in the shape of James saying "Sod it, I'll take us all int' Subbaru"(sic). Which he duly did. I missed out again!- A rollercoaster B-road blast in my dream car with someone at the wheel who could really drive... god I was gutted. Things moved on and for various reasons I left the band after seven eventful and enjoyable years. I never lost the obsession and a year and a half later I bought into the dream. I've had my MY99 turbo for four months now and I'm like a dog with four tails and five *******. I'm nearly forty-one but it just goes to show that no-one ever really grows up, they just lose the impulse to put their baseball cap on back-to-front.
Thanks for listening and I hope my reminiscences have been entertaining!

I always loved them and promised myself that when i turned 25 i'd get one.2 weeks before my 21st b-day i got myself a brand new clio 1.2 16v. i then got a quick blast on a wrx of a friend of mine and 3 weeks later i ended up trading my clio wich was just over a month old for a uk turbo.
Insurance kills me and its a bit thirsty, but its well worth it!!

I wanted a scooby for ages, but like most things I do, I never got round to getting swapping the "dream" for reality...

I was too busy with all my other cars gte's, gsi's rs turbos, 16v etc etc & wasting a load of money running 2-3 cars instead of 1 decent one...

Got sick of working out in the cold fixing & modding the other "boy" racer cars, realised I was wasting my money as well..

The final straw came when I split up with my missus, was gonna buy a house instead of a scooby, now the handcuffs were off I could do what I wanted! LOL!

So woke up one morning, needed cheering up so went looking for a car, any car as long as it was fast.. looked at evo's, rx7's beemers, cossies, loads of impreza turbo's, wrx's etc etc, then saw a smart sti 555 import, so went home, had a poo to think about it! lol!...wiped my **** & went and got it there & then, impulse buy, put a smile back on my face which is still here 6 months on!

From a cost point of view is abit more expensive than keeping a few sh*ters on the road, & much much more fun , but still glad I got it, always wanted one & I love it!, good community too!. Not cheap to run, insure etc, mine is stupid & impractacle, but it's motivates me to work the next day, 19"'s etc etc

ps
(missus is back, wants me to get rid of it!- no way!)

I have and always will love Scoobies I can remember first seeing the Legacy on the Rally scene some years ago. I can still remember thinking who the hell Subaru were ? But when I watched its peformances against proven Rally motors and having heard the Flat Four at full chat I was hooked. The Impreza was just the next phase and I have always had a weak spot for Scoobs ever since. A couple of years ago I bought a WRX from a friend and whilst it gave me a few headaches along the way I just couldn't get enough of it......to me it is the ICON car of the 1990's. I can also remember it topping the JD power survey for a few years and there are not many cars IMHO that can give you such a buzz when driving them.......LONG LIVE THE SCOOBY.

Had 3 nice Kia prides in a row over 6 years. Then got a Matiz but it was too fast, so I took a step backwards and got an STI.

Was driving along a nice twisty country lane in my last car, an MR2, still genuinely thinking it was one the fastest cars on the road ... a Subaru appeared in my rear view mirror .. didn't know much about them so decided to leave it behind as it was ruining my unrestricted view of the countryside ... floored it in 2nd then 3rd then forth .. glanced in my mirror expecting to see a dot on the horizon ... instead the subaru was exactly where it had been and Im sure the driver was tapping his fingers on the steering wheel and looking very bored ... next straight he sailed by effortlessly ..

Bought the Scoob a month or two later ... didnt even need to think about it over a poo ...

In 1998, nearly killed me and the rest of my family by overtaking a lorry in France then running out of exceleration (Ford Escort 1.8 Ghia). Vowed to buy the fastest car I could afford. Turned out to be a brand new 5 door MY98 scoob.
Met Pete Croney and Stef Reader and the trackday bug was also caught. Only ended when the wife bought me some slippers and a pipe for xmas so had to p/ex the scoob for a Saab 9-3 Convertible Still miss it all.

I'd been looking at a faster car than my Punto and had priced up a number of imports (Supras and Skyline R33s) but was not keen on the running costs and risks involved. After about a year of not being able to find a car I was happy with I decided I could now afford a financially "safer" new car with a warranty and produced a short list. I'd set my heart on a Celica T-sport but was talked into testing a Civic Type-R and a Leon Cupra.

After a look around our office carpark and seeing 3 scoobys I thought I wouls test one of them for comparison. "Don't do it, you'll only buy one!" I was warned by one of their owners and a month later I bought a WRX.

Why? It was the best out of the bunch, the Celica was too slow and I couldn't find a Leon to test. As for the Civic, it is a fantastic car but just doesn't look mad enough for me.

So you could say I sort of fell into owning an Impreza but I love it!

browsing auto trader online on my monday day off last march, came across a my99 silver, 64k all the right bits, mint, only 1 mile from my home.
phoned them up for a test drive, absolutly smitten!
HAD TO HAVE IT.
Gave my bravo hgt back to the finance company, got a new loan, bought my pride and joy, and the best car I have ever owned.

Still smiling now

I didn't know WTF a Subaru was before I played Colin McRae 1 That was before I could even drive. There was only 2 cars I would drive in that game, and they were the Impreza & Evo4. I liked them both equally (Until I got my 1st ride in an Evo )

So I learnt to drive, had a banger for a year, got a 25% pay rise (Which was still less than £15k) So I went out & bought my peppermint wagon Nobody at work believed me. I had to show them pictures & my receipt

Here's the funny bit. People at work actually started talking about me when I wasn't there. They kept saying that I was a lunatic for spending all my money on a car like that instead of going out & getting pished or spending my money on women

That was the happy bit of my subaru ownership. It was all downhill after it started falling to bits, and I got my 1st ride in an Evo7

How many others would admit to only knowing about the Subaru Impreza after playing Colin McRae?
