Actually Japan doesn't refer to them by any numbers at all...
We refer to them by model code and variant, ie: GDBC, GDB being the model, and C being the current variant with twin scroll turbo, equal length headers, DCCD-A etc.
Note that the STi type RA spec C, apart from being lighter, gets revised front end geometry (more caster), and a ball bearing turbo (for even faster spool up ), vs. the sleeve bearing turbo on the std STi.

It looks like a JDM STI9, although a little difficult to tell as there is only a front view. However I can't remeber the JDM version havuing driving lights. I thought it had fog covers although I may be wrong. The engine spec will reveal what it is, due you have it ?

ajbasebloke, were you at the Auto Salon show in Chiba last w/e? There was a new STi there with only 4 seats, i.e. recaro rear seats. It still had twin scroll, equal headers etc but sported a rather funky carbon front and rear spoiler. Nice! (It was NOT a 2.5l lumpe either, boo!!)

There are reasons for there not being a 2.5 here in Japan yet, and chief among them are emissions/fuel economy.
Anyway, to the 4 seater - that was a one off. Testing the waters to see how people react to the nifty interior. There may be limited editions boasting such interiors in the future
Back to the 2.5 thang, once you've driven the current JDM 2.0 STi motor, I think you'll see why they keep the best stuff for us But honestly, I am told by those who know that emissions make it unlikely that you'll see the twinscroll from IM... Which makes Iain Litchfield's life easier Of course, you can always whack equal length headers and a twinscroll on your UK car (with an ECU tune of course), although a good ball bearing turbo would give you a seriously fast spooling, fun to drive car IMHO.
Cheers
edit to add: sorry, not a dealer and don't know any...

thanks to everyone that helped !!!!! i now have the car, and i must agree with ajbasebloke, compared to the uk spec this car is awesome. it is the gdb c model with twin scroll, and a few nice little exras, !!!!! steve thanks for that, it has got the fog light covers but they dont fit on with the bulb conversion. one last question for all; on this model it has a diff lock and a dccd button, which setting should it be on. thankyou

Lol, all these people tying themselves up in knots trying to stick to a numbering system that Subaru themselves no longer use...
You're just as guilty of talking b*ll*cks as RON Steve.
Where did you get the idea that the Japanese are "1" in front of us? Their cars run on a parallel development programme, which is why trying to fit the UK cars into the number system established by the JDM cars is an irrelevant, silly and confusing exercise.
Officially speaking there's no such thing as an "STi8", or an "STi9", or an "STi10" either, as AJBB says, and the rest of you who are jabbering away to the contrary are just making it up as you go along.

The Sti9 is already out in Japan. Has been for nearly a year. Are you sure you don't mean the Sti10 as the Japs seem to be 1 in front of us

Impreza STis are officially just called 'STi' starting with the Bugeye. If u really want to attach a numeral suffix after STi, then the current JDM car is STi'9'.
STi'7' is the original Bugeye, STi'8' includes the first Spec C version, & STi'9' is the current facelifted car. JDM STi'8' can be identified by a reprofiled grill & bonnet. That never made it to any export spec cars.

Right, let's try and start again...
Subaru don't use this numbering system any more Sam, but unofficially other people have tried to carry it on. Because there's no common consensus among these unofficial sources about what this numbering system actually means, you get the confusion you've seen above. Some folk will tell you that the 2001 and 2002 model year Jap cars were STi7, making the 03 car the 8, while others say (with some justification) that the 2001 car was 7, 2002 was 8, and 2003 was 9, with 2004 being 10. In reality though this is all conjecture, and it's confusing, seeing as you've got to know which "system" the person you're talking to is using.
As stated there's officially no such thing as an STi8, so there isn't a "revised version" of it.
The 2004 model year cars have just hit the streets. If you're considering buying a car, suggest you get away from all this talk of "8" and ask the dealer what model year it is. If it's a 2003 model year car it will have the new face, twin-scroll turbo and equal length headers. If it's a 2002 "STi8", it will be a bugeye, and will have the older style turbo/normal unequal headers.

There is a new model out in Japan, although the differences over and above the MY03 cars seem to be pretty subtle, which obviously wasn't the case when the '03 cars superseded '02.

The thing you really have to be wary of is the resellers market, buyer beware I would say as cars can be confused, since the UK and JDM's have the same body etc and there are JDM's around that don't have the DCCDA, HID's, tints etc (the EL for example) then a careful check is needed, thats one reason why I personally differentiate as I do. At least it makes people think.
The difference between the UK spec and the JDM's is vast, the engine internals are very much improved as is the fuel system in addition to the exhaust and turbo variance.
And MY04 STi UK is not really any different to the MY03.
cheers

There is definitely differences between JDM MY01 STi & MY02 STi, & one of them cosmetic (different grill & bonnet). Best Motoring recorded different laps times on either cars in places such as Tsukuba & Fuji.
