STi Type R - No ABS ??
#1
Mate of mine is considering an STi Type R (probs. V5 or V6), he's a bit put off buying one because it doesnt have ABS and he will use it, on the odd occasion as transport for his family.
I know that ABS is not going to stop the car any quicker but help to steer past rather than crash into things.
Opinions please from STi Type R owners?
Much apprecited.

I've no ABS or airbags in the 22B. I am running uprated brakes (Prodrive 330mm) but can honestly say that I have never locked up on the public road. However I can imagine in a 'tractor in the road past a blind bend' blind panic scenario that the probability of my running into problems is increased due to lack of ABS...though brake feel is soo good I like to think I wouldn't
You *can* get ABS equipped type R's...some WRX RA v ltd's had them at the expense of the DCCD..at least they did in the STI4 generation.

yep on the classic the DCCD and ABS couldnt co-exist on the car so it was either or.
My MY00 WRX RA LTD has abs but no DCCD, must say teh ABS has only cut in twice in over 3 years off ownership.

ABS? ABS is for wimps!
Seriously, I could have done with ABS this morning - the roads were slippy and the front wheels locked as I was braking from 60mph.. Then again, it all adds to the fun - plus you get the DCCD to play around with.

try adding some diff lock in the wet, it helps to stop the front wheels locking in slipery conditions.
I prefer a car without ABS. All the STi versions of the TypeR/RA have DCCD, its the non STi WRX version that doesnt.

Plus, the fact that it ain't there in the first place means I don't have to worry about disabling it if I'm driving in the woods, or if there's snow around...
As John says, if the car is a bit grabby under braking, just turn the diff up a bit, or change to a more suitable pad compound.

John,
I have also test driven such cars.
Think you will find that you cold spec them when new to exclude some of the good bits, int he same way that you could spec a non wrx type r to have a dccd if you wanted one.
Has your friend considered a P1 as that has what he is after.

Chees for the replies guys.
Adam, thanks mate, good P1 just a little bit more on the cash front, hence he was looking at Type R's which I'm made to believe from here, are faster etc.

Have a STI 5 Type R Ltd.
No ABS. But AP 6 pots .
This IMHO is the best brake system you can have on these cars.
Tried various brake pad combinations on standard brakes.
Learnt through smoking/not stopping that this is the way to go.
Another £1500 on budget.You won't regret.
Steve.

I prefer the car without ABS and if the family is in then you drive extra careful so you shouldnt need ABS rememebr ABS aint going to stop you any quicker and the thought is you swerve to avoid something that you were braking for and go head on into a vehicle coming the other way.

I doubt that car has been face lifted. I knew there was one with ABS and no DCCD cause I was going to buy one once but decided against it after viewing.

ABS and DCCD didnt co-exist in classics.
A WRX Type R non STI would not have DCCD but would have ABS. Thats what I think that car is/was.
The seats, rear lights, front bumper etc could all be swapped. The dash clock doesnt have RPM in the centre indicating it not being STI.
To be fair its not advertised as an STI...

the non DCCD cars always had the R160 diff also (hence sliding rear calipers on all variants) - think of it as a 4door STi in a 2door shell running gear wise...........
