HI all, first time on here and I'm after some help.

I want to buy a Turbo motor (to put in a project of mine) but I could do with some help.

First off, how do you tell the difference between Jap and UK spec motors (engine numbers and where to look for them?)

Secondly, I've been on the phone to a bloke who's got an engine for sale almost complete but it has no coil packs! I would like to think these are easy to come by but who sells them and how much (rough costs?)

Any other info you lot have as well as hints and tips (what to look out for when buying?) would be a great help,
Thanks

Steve

Hi mate, welcome to the forum. Firstly I'd just like to say I think its really crappy that out of the 60 or so people that have looked at this post not one of them knows what coilpacks are or how much they cost! Do me a favour snetters. Right, rant over back to your question. Not sure exactly how to tell between uk or import as I believe they are virtually identical apart from the ecu. If your looking to put a scooby engine in something else I suspect that you would know more about what to look for than me. Instead of a coil and HT leads the scooby engine has basically 4 individual coils that fit over the sparkplugs. To the best of my knowledge they are about £65 each. Cheers

Wow, at last some replies! I thought I'd upset the whole community by asking for help on tearing the heart out of one of your beloved machines!

But trust me the motors coming out of a totalled fu~@ed scooby so I'm letting it breathe new life!

Thanks for the info and I'll have a look at the link.
Just one last thing, is that £56 per coil pack (presume I'll need 4)?

Cheers

Steve

edited to say thanks the link works mw2655!

Hi
You can usually tell the difference by all the litle clues such as jap writing on the sun visor or the crap power steerng reseviour on early WRXs etc etc
Go to this link for Jap codes

Hope this helps

Another piece of info for you, at least I hope I'm right on this. If it has individual coil packs then it is almost certainly a phase 1 engine (<98?). The phase 2 has the more traditional coil and HT leads to each of the spark plugs arrangement.

If the engine is out of the car it's quite hard to tell what engine it is. Look out for thick metal head gaskets (STI's)

There are a lot of UK engines masquerading as STI's out there so be careful.

As above the only way to verify a car is via VIN plate data.

may sound stupid, but don't forget to take the ECU from under the passenger side foot well kick panel (10mm spanner to remove) if you buy that engine as there are many types depoending on engine.

Graz: Cheers for the info....I thought this as well!

what would scooby do....Thick head gaskets? Is this to lower compression because of the turbo/higher output (BHP)?

bits'n'pieces.....I'll be sure to get the ECU, and the ignition switch as I've been told they 'talk' to each other and you can't start the engine with out both matching bits, is this true?
