Question

I had a near miss last night with some dick in a Pajero who obviously thought that 4 wheel drive was invincible On snow & ice he came around a bend at about 40 mph on my side and swerved towards his side spinning it and putting it nose first in a ditch and hedge It was scarey for a moment though but I just laughed at him after as he reversed out with little or no damage.

People seem to forget that they may be able to get their car moving but once moving it's a giant sledge

Take it easy

Had a nasty one a few years back, sharp bend with an camber, saw a guy coming the other way and he was starting to loose it. I stopped and watched him pirrouetting (sp?) towards me thinking "Oh f**k". He hit the kerb a few yards in front of me, bounced off and headed for the kerb on the other side, hit about half way down the length of my car then started heading back again and hit the kerb behind me and slithered off down the road as I pulled away again

Some kid in a snotter of an Escort rear ended me. Total damage = 1 numberplate(£10) and 1 bumper bracket(£6)

Pain in the *** is the hassle of getting the bracket and crawling under my car to fit it.

Very close call last night, took me over two hours to do the 8 miles from work. But I had to get fuel so I went out a little later to fill her up.
Heading back at slow slow speed up to a local T junction it just locked (overun in 1st) and I slid half way across the junction. Thankfully at that time nothing was coming, managed to start it and reverse back before anything came. But I was watching my mirror for the next customer, who slid down the road sidways stopping about a foot off my bumber. I was shaking when I got in home ............. not cause I was frightened but my car is my baby and I dont want any damage .....

No snow here, but there is ice on untreated roads... Which I forgot about as I came screeching off a salted main road into a single track back road to work.

I suddenly found I was having to make some very rapid 'adjustments' to the control systems of the said vehicle (police talk ) - must have frightened a Taxi driver parked up on the other side of the road As I pulled past him thinking 'Hmmm... that was close' I put the foot down (gently as usual ), started accelerating and realised as all the wheels started spinning a bit faster than the car was moving and the steering had gone very light that I was back onto another patch of ice - So I took it a tad more gently after that

I can not believe how a 03 wrx (bog standard) oversteers on ice and snow I don't know if it's just the car, my driving or what, but as soon as i'm in any sort of bend and apply some throttle (meaning any at all (at less than 10mph)), the back end comes *flying* out and then the car resorts to a four wheel drift towards curbs, lamp posts, parked up cars etc

Opposite lock catches the tail slide nicely most of the time, but how the hell do you stop a four wheel slide? Not being the king of drifting, I've tried applying the brakes (car keeps going to the side), applying throttle (car tries to change direction to wherever nose is pointing, but it all seems to slide faster as well).

... and to think that the car is so understeered in the dry... What causes this change in handling, it's definitely worse than my dads old rwd Volvo 240 (The old tank edition ). Seeing as all the wheels have the same amount of grip (next to nil), i would have thought that the handling would be the same as if on tarmac but slides happen at slower speeds etc? I'm confused, someone please shed some light

Also, once the car is sliding, should I continue applying throttle and keep pointing the wheels in the direction i want to go (and the tail will wobble behind and eventually settle down), or do I back off, or even brake?

Oh well, atleast I had fun last night and as a bonus only managed to curb one alloy as well

The easiest thing to do if it all goes wrong is to simply dimp the clutch this will in most cases allow the wheels to grip again because they are not required to slow the car or speed it up anymore. When hae control again then carry on.

The oversteer on ice/snow is caused by the great amount of power something which isn't such a problem in the dry. If you had 1000 bhp then you may experience the same

Thumbs down

I nearly hit a cyclist

He was waiting to turn right at a junction, and decided to go at the last minute in front of me, pedling frantically and not getting too far.

I hope the sound of locked up wheels and the sight of a car heading for him will imprint on his brain so he won't try anything so stupid ever again!

Worse still, you'd expect that if it was some kid going home from school or on the paper round...but this was a bloke in his mid 30's

PaulPalmer: Aha, that kind of makes sense I suppose, never been in a 1000bhp impreza

Cool, now that I have all the theoretical background clear, all I have to learn to become the next Juha Kankunen is to control my power slides at 15mph Pikes Peak, here I come
Oh well, best be off to start saving up for new alloys

Me! Bumped a kerb last night at low speed (thanks ABS). Scuffed wheel, tracking out a bit, and one very pi$$ed off driver.

I'll get the tracking sorted on Saturday, but more worried about the wheel (all 4 in perfect nick before last night) Has anyone used one of these mobile allot wheel refurbishers?

Had a close one yesterday morning, approaching a junction coming downhill, 1 car stopped in front of me waiting to go out onto the main road. Even though I was going very slowly and braking very gently the ABS got a bit keen and decided I'd be better off without brakes. Had a brief moment of thinking I was going to bump the car in front and then realised it would be a better bet to steer round it instead. No problems steering around him since the ABS wasn't letting the wheels lock, so it's not all bad I guess. Ended up stopping along side him, on the wrong side of the road. Embarrasing but no damage done.

Last time we had some snow I took my scoob out late at nighty to get some driver training done on the local country roads. Soon found out that on a slope or under braking it was just a fookin great sledge

Had to go home cross country last night (all the A roads were blocked by plonkers who couldn't drive) and had a greaty time BUT not in a scoob but in an old mundano diesel best bit was being able to stop when requested due to NO ABS

I was feeling all proud of myself at having got up Hedsor Hill (a steep one), I then reached a t-junction on the flat at the top. I was only going about 15mph, but a car was coming so needed to stop. My car just started sledging tried on-offing the brakes, and eventually yaked on the handbrake as well, just manged to stop in time. Managed a nice hand brake turn into my drive though. I put the car in the garage and have left it there!

Had to laugh at Henriks post. Exactly the same as my 94 WRX. Couldn't believe how much the car oversteered with only a hint of throttle. I must have had a 7 second 4 wheel drift this morning at about 5 mph, totally out of control really. Got it under control eventually and cursed myself, then did exactly the same at the next junction and curbed the nearside rear. I don't really think there's much you can do, apart from behave yourself in the first place. Wide road tyres on snow and ice don't work. Certainly brought my percieved driving skills down a peg or two, I just totally tensed up and prayed for the best, at 5 mph. Think i'll just have to accept that my car isn't a Playstation with me at the wheel.

Went out last night for some fun, but tested ABS on straight road first to see effect - there was zero braking at all!

Then went with a few other to get some donuts in, dead easy in the snow if the car park is big enough that you dont hit anything. Then went off to pub up in the hills. Took a square left junction only to find myself facing the other way after a little too much early accelatation. The wall on the inside got a little close for comfort though but missed everything.

I nearly parked my car at the T junction at the end of my road yesterday morning, due to the abs kicking in.

Now i've pulled the fuse out for it i can brake, and have some control over my car again

There was a nice empty car park next to my work so i spent the best par of my luch hour doing doughnuts and figure of 8 drifts giggling like a school girl all the time

I nearly kerbed my scoob last night on black ice. Thankfully I was only crawling cos I was **** scared of hitting something so I stopped before I hit it.

Had to drive all the way home from Leeds at 20mph!!! Can you believe it? I bet a few people were amazed at seeing a scoob doing 20mph!!!

Almost wrote the car off last night, still not sure what happened - went round a corner on a difficult road very slowly ended up in a white out and starting sliding across both lanes.

Least if I could of seen anything it would of been two lanes, kept waiting for the crunch since I knew there was either a sharp drop on my left into the sea or a wall on the right..

All I could feel was the momentum of the back end building - in the end crunched to a halt in a snow drift on the wrong side of the road. Which was fine but I still couldnt see anything, then two seconds after I got onto a clear bit of road a car passed...

Add to the fact I forgot my mobile and it could of been really nasty !

Had an MPV drive into the back of me last night as the smow was just settling, luckily it was the missus' discovery and the MPV hit only the towbar, well, lucky for us anyway!!

A few near misses here and there for my journey from Uxbridge to Welwyn Garden City...all at low speeds trying to brake (virtually gave up on the brakes and used 1st gear engine breaking instead).

Worse one was round the back of Leavesden...slight downhill slope, traffic lights, little dab of the brakes and voila! an instant £20,000 sled. Managed to ride the slightly sideways slide to a stop (the ABS seemed to take for ages to 'release') without hitting anything (and only denting my pride in front of all the queing cars on the opposite side of the road).

Was much more street wise this morning - which is more than can be said for the **** in a jag x type that overtook me on the railway line leading into WGC (i was being seriously cautious) and then promptly realised that the downwards sloping section of the bridge was still iced up...enjoyed watching his out of control slide from a nice safe (and extremely slow) distance behind...shame he didn't prang his car in some way, would have given him a lesson.

Roll on the better weather so I can start enjoying my scoob again!
