1.6 litre too slow??
#1
Hey, I did a search but didn't find an answer.
I'm looking at buying a 98 model Impreza. Base model. 5 spd manual with the 1.6 litre engine. (no turbs)
At the moment I drive a Silvia with the CA18DET, (1.8 litre turbo). I don't mind getting a slower car because I've already had my license suspended once and I'd like to avoid any more..temptations.
So are the 1.6 litres god awful slow or what? I don't mind driving a non-performance vehicle but there are limits. Are they like, Hyundai Excel slow??
Not meaning any offense to 1.6 litre drivers. After all, I am aspiring to your ranks

I think you'll find that most of us have never driven a 1.6 - they were discontinued in the UK some years ago and were never popular. Frankly, though, the 2.0 non-turbo engine is wheezy enough.

I had a 1.8GL until yesterday, and that was not exactly quick. 0-60 would be around 11 sec, realistically, & it sits nicely at 85+ on the motorway.
They're good cars though - Just on the way to pick up my Rangie, I came across 5 or 6 cars stuck in snow. Just drove around the edge & kept going
Insurance on mine was £890 without n/c, & I'm now 22, having had it for a year.
I would imagine that the 1.6 could be a little underpowered though. Why not try one? Quite a lot on auto trader, but I'd get a 2 litre one, as the insurance isn't that much more.

I had a 2l without turbo, and although a good car, not particularly quick. Fine for cruising on motorway, pleasant enough to drive. I think the 1600 but probably be underpowered enough to be annoying, as it's quite a heavy lump.

A quick search gives a few good threads on the 1.6, so here's some links for you.

Why do you want an Impreza specifically? It's only worth the extra cost (when compared to a similar powered car, the Impreza will almost always cost more in insurance, fuel and servicing) if you really must have a Scoob and you can't afford a faster one, or if you want a specific feature of the Impreza e.g. AWD.
The book says 13.6sec 0-62mph, top end is 108mph IIRC, 88bhp. I know 2.0GL/Sports are faster than the book says in reality though, so that might apply to the 1.6 too.
Hope that helps.
Ben
PS. Try searching for "GL" rather than "1.6", SN search doesn't seem to like figures.

I had a GL (1996) for 116,000 miles, and lost it by going round a bend too fast. It was great in snow/towing 2wd cars out of mud etc but unless you do these sorts of things, why not get a cheaper 2wd jap car?

Used a 2wd 1.6GL as a courtsey car for a few weeks.
It drives like a Vauxhall Cavelier, so nothing fantastic as you'd expect Handled and drove completely different to the Turbos.
It moved along ok, and the 1.6 8valve is pretty smooth and free reving. Not fast, not slow....just pretty average, same goes for the handling, that's why I say it's like a cavelier....pretty average at everything
