just driven back from the south of France and 98 ron petrol is about 1.10 Euros and 95 ron 1.09 Euros making a difference of less than a penny a litre , WHY ? How come we have to pay such a big difference over here (about 4 or 5p a litre where I live)? Is this another case of rip off Britain ? ...any views ?

I seem to remember reading that the petrol companies try to justify the difference in price because super costs them more to produce ...what a load of bull not in France it doesn't !

Most countries have a price difference. This table comparing fuel costs is from a Dutch site and gives a good indicator of the 95 - 98 RON price diffences.
Of the 29 countries, GB comes around mid-table. So not really a rip off then...
Difference between 98RON and 95RON expressed as % of the 95RON price in local currency - bigger % is bad!
Ranking Country Percent
01 Bulgaria 20.3%
02 Czech Republic 20.2%
03 Ukraine 15.6%

Super Unleaded is around the 1€ mark in most cheaper places in France (ie my local automated Shell garage). I've seen it as low as 96 euro cents at supermarkets.
Driving back from Barcelona on Sunday I bought SUL from a CEPSA (Total) station for 84 euro cents- about 60p ltr. Spain seems to be very cheap-not just for petrol either, a pack of 20 Marlboro costs €2.50 (£1.80ish) and a ltr of Tanqueray export strength 47% Gin is about £6.
The UK is a rip off no doubt about it.
