Search Enabled for Testing - Plus Members Only
Hi All
PLEASE DO NOT PURCHASE PLUS MEMBERSHIP JUST TO USE THIS FEATURE.
We've opened up search as a trial first of all to ScoobyNet Plus members in order to monitor server load, etc.
The indexing is still not 100% complete. We're missing about 6 months of last year, but that will catch up over the next couple of days.
If all goes well, we're hoping to have search available for everyone within the next few days, which will be about 5 days ahead of schedule.
All the best
Simon

Not sure the search is working quite right ? I'm trying to find a thread from the For Sale forum from which I bought a couple of PS2 games. When I search it isn't coming back with much ? Would have expected a lot more results ?
Incidentally the bloke mugged me off, so if you're reading bloke, I know where you live and don't take kindly to people theiving from me.

Ahhh, yes. Didn't see that Simon/Shaun thanks. Could well be the problem. Searched for 2 threads that I was after with no luck. I'll see if I can find the manually.
Is it possible to display the forum from which the results have been found like in SN v2 ? ie. if a resulting thread was posted in General or Wanted etc ?

agreed re the speed of the site.
It's looking like server upgrade time. The previous software was written for pure speed, so this software definitely requires a bit more umph.
We're trying to avoid moving to Linux or similar for a number of reasons, although it would without question improve performance. Looking at other options now and hope to have this resolved asap. It appears that as soon as we start getting over 450 - 500 users online at the same time, the site starts to slow down. 650 seems to be the most we can cope with before it comes to a grinding halt.
Bear with us a little longer and we'll have it nailed

Is the indexing still ongoing? I think there are still a load of more recent posts not showing up in search.
Also, there seems to be a lot of threads in the database with no subject. If you choose to view all posts in NSR since the beginning, then sort by Thread Title (Ascending) you will see what I mean!

I still find it amazing that along with all this big change in software which I personally hate you did it without even the basic search that there was before enabled.. surely this should have been sorted before going to you new software?!

As has already been explained, the search could not be switched on until the database was indexed. It would have taken too long to index it BEFORE putting the site back up, hence it is being done concurrently.
Simon: did you see my post above?

So the rush to put the new software in when the old one was still up and running was done for what reason???
Seems a bit odd to remove search.. it seems to me if you look in drivetrain and see how many threads are purely there due to no search (if you frequent drivetrain lots then you will know what I mean) that it is a bit like a mail order company rushing out a catalogue with no index..

From: R.I.P Piphead, at least you are home now :(
For me the search seems to be quite slow (quite a bit slower than the old one) but then it is a much more powerful search facility
When search was enabled, I was on a 2Mb link, and the whole site crawled (not just the search)
I assume that everything is still being indexed, as some of the searches I did, came back with a couple of results for 2003, then nothing for 2002 or 2001, but back to 2000, and I know the search I did had stuff from 04 and 02 and 01 (based on previous searches)
Also some things I searched for came back with no results, even on some commonly used words
when it is all finished it should be quite an improvement
I agree with the Load Balancing, would this not be a better option ? and also to move away from IIS :P unless its on version 6 (much faster)

Hi All
We switched search on for all for 24 hours and monitored the server loads, etc and it definitely slowed the board down. There were a few points where the site was really crawling. For this reason we have decided to investigate ways of improving the performance of search prior to switching it fully on.
Apologies for the inconvenience.
