Unhappy Wastegate Solenoid/Actuator

A much debated subject I know. Had usual symptoms of sudden power loss under hard acceleration. have checked oil levels which are about half full on dipstick. Tried brake cleaner through solenoid. Have even tried a different solenoid from a breakers yard but same syptoms. Ecu is giving me a code 44 which is , guess, what, the waste gate control solenoid valve. My local Subaru garage wants £175 plus vat for a new solenoid which I don't want to spend unless I am certain the problem will be cured. Is there anything else I can try first or does anyone know where else I can get a new solenoid much cheaper.

Also the Actuator is clicking a lot. Is this normal or could it be because it's not getting the pressure from the solenoid? What causes the wastegate to open if not the solenoid when changing gear? Thats when I can here it making the noise.
