All the Type R's are imports, and having gone from a WRX to an STi5 Type R myself, I can honestly say there is no comparison.

Just get it - you know you want to

As far as the impreza is concerned the type R is the dogs bollocks.
280bhp short gear ratio & ajustable diff + loads of other sti stuff.
No impreza acelerates as hard and fast(maybe an RA or spec C)

I've a 98 (R) Sti4 Type R and bought it knowing bugger all about Scoobs (actually went to buy an Evo!) What sold it for me was the adjustable centre diff bias (great for in the snow as it proved a couple of weeks ago!)

There are a few characteristics - the diff can make a noise when on 'lock' (i.e when driving in snow) but I'm told this is normal. Also, even when the diff is fully open you can sometimes get the 'clicking' type noise (tight turning). Experts say the AFM's are crap on these (Sti4) so an upgrade to a better type along with a decent fuel pump would probably be a worthy investment.

Insurance costs me £895 a year with clean record etc and loads of security.

It's a fantastic car and being a 2 door it actually looks the b***ox as well. Parts haven't been a problem for me (I've already needed a new rear bumper and retainers and have done loads of other cosmetic mods...) and it is very quick (sometimes scarily so...)

Personally, I couldn't now think of another Scooby that I'd want to own more!

insurance group 20, recommend to get ecu re-mapped for uk fuel OR use octane booster. mine wasnt remapped when came over from japan and the engine only lasted 3 days on out fuel before the big end went pop

I have an STi 4 Type R and i would say that if you get the choice try and get one with the newer dash in ( Momo steering wheel and center storage box on dash )

Hi I own a Type R 98 Sti ver 4 and have been told this version has the best AFM sensor and the only cars that had problems were the 99 versions. Agree with Marx get the ver with the center dash box and momo sterring wheel. These cars will definitely out accelerate most uk subs because of the short gearing although on long journey`s 70mph can seem like your over revving but everything on mine is running great without ECU at minute but plenty of Octane booster. All parts for mine have been no worries and can think the only concern would be side body panels and glass. The center diff is fantastic and I also wanna mention I got 293bhp and 305lbft on Well lane rollers with very little mods decat and K&N panel filter so they are good cars.

I am paying £1147 fully comp with mods and full discount and no clains or convictions 29 year old Newcastle laods of security.
