Question

How many miles is an Impreza engine good for? Subaru's build quality is well known, but are the engines as robust as, say, a Volkswagen's which will easily do 150k, 200k without any serious trouble (if well looked after) The most mileage I've seen on an advertised Impreza Turbo is 80k which is no way in the same league. Obviously the turbo stresses the engine, but surely they are built to take it? Does anyone have a turbo with Starship mileage?

I'm 3K under 100,000 miles in my uk turbo. the car still goes fine though I don't expect much money when I sell it! The only problem I had was a leaking head gasket but that was easy to replace.

EASY????????? Surely thats an engine out job? How about oil consumption? Does this become a problem at circa 100k? What about the turbo itself? RS turbos/Renault 5 turbos would never achieve this mileage on the original blower.

Cool

107000 with no mention of a new turbo in the documented history. Oil never needs topping up between services.

Stu,
Did you replace that head gasket yourself?
Is it reasonably possible as a DIY job?
Cheers

I'm sure I saw somewhere that the turbo would last approx 70k miles, and that black smoke being pushed out the back was a pretty good sign it needed replacing. Oh, that and an engine fire.

My Legacy Turbo was at 97K when I sold it and they was no smoking, no heavy oil consumption and performance was still stonking. Only thing to give the age away were the noisy tappets.

Seemed to be a much tougher engine that previous cars I've had that seemed that needed stuff done around the 60-70K mark such as Vauxhall, Fiats and Rovers I've had before.

Ernie,

I assume you're looking to buy a second hand Scooby?

Don't just look at the turbo as being a source of expense - head gasket has been mentioned, also look at the clutch (weak point if hammered)and transmission as well as all the usual stuff like bearings etc (none of which might be too expensive in themselves, but sure add up). Things like pistons etc should be fine to huge mileages - if you've got any oil burn at all, walk away.

A well looked after Scooby should be as reliable as, say, a Saab 900 turbo, but the point is that LOTS of Scoobs get used very hard indeed, and probably do far fewer motorway miles than other cars as a proportion of their total mileage. So the mileage is rather less relevant that the seller - if they proudly tell you about the 20 track days they've done, check it all very thoroughly.

Thumbs up

Hello Nick

I already own one - MY00 UK Turbo. I am just simply curious to their longevity, and the mileage at when they become a bit long in the tooth. As I said in the start of this topic, I have never seen one advertised with more than 80k. Just curious!!!!!

Mine's 97K on an M reg. Had it 18 months - FSH and no problems to date except a leaking oil seal - (£2 on a service). Doesn't use any oil, no smoke -(hope it will) last forever!!?? Major problem to date is the cost of the 90K service, which is the 'large' service (fluids change etc) AND a cambelt change. Ouch..!!

83k on an N plate and rising. "Engine" probs in the last 10k/5 months that I have owned it amount to a temperature sensor failure only. No oil or water consumption whatsoever and oil is always clear when I check it.

Would be surprised if it's not good for another 50k at least (here's hoping as I need to sell in September)!

Question

Are the Legacy non-turbo engines similar?
I'm sure there must be mega-miles on some of them. I have a 2.2 with 127k - nothing except normal service and maintainance (is that spelt right?).

Ernie & Richm,

By easy I meant not too expensive (£200 ish) and the garage did it for me!

Oil consumption is honestly as new, the turbo is fine (car very fast and no smoke), my tappets are not even noisy. I do do a lot of motorway miles but I also frequently drive the car very hard. Basically I find that so long as it is regurlarly serviced (mine has fsh) the car just goes on with no probs.

I've had my M plat 95 for a year and a half. It's done 101k+ miles now. It did have a crank sensor replaced at 80k. Also, there's a kind of wining noise which sounds like the powersteering pump which the guys at the dealers are looking at next service. Nothing serious, just an anoying noise. Apart from that the car is perfect. Still good to drive, pulls well, no oil loss (FSH), no water loss, still get 30mpg.

I'm keeping it for a few more years, so it should have about 160k on when I finally trad it in for a new one (it will be mine, oh yes, it will be mine...).

The only stinger was the 90k service costs...
