I dunno so much, 40's are ideal, 45's are a tad tight, but do fit on the right wheels, but 50's may be just too tall!

Shkuby, these tyres are far bigger than ideal for a classic. A 215/40 x 17 is 647mm in diameter when new, compared with the 610mm standard fit tyres. This will raise your overall gearing by some 5.5%, and make your speedometer under-estimate by the same degree, which could give you an overall under-read, which is technically illegal (and dodgy from a "not getting done for speeding" point of view).

If the offset of whatever wheels you use is absolutely spot-on, they should just about fit under, but even then they're very marginal and are likely to rub.

205 50 16 are std on classic. 215 40 17 is the replacement but on bug eyes 215 45 17.
IMHO 215 50 17 is too tall, even if it fits without fouling which is questionable at the rear when loaded.

thanks all

temptation to get 2001 wheels is great as the going rate for brand new wheels /tyres is so low... but never mind.
