So, the P1 is still the Daddy
According to this months EVO magazine.
It said.....
"The P1 shouts very loudly how far Subaru has lost the plot. It has a finess that has disappeared not only from current Subarus, but many other drivers cars today. It doesn't understeer like the modern stuff and is better looking. Who in their right mind would buy an STI when this exists? the P1 is still the Daddy."

All depends on what you want I guess. Having had two Scoobs, I'm looking to replace my MY01. I'll probably go for a UK STI. It has got to be reliable and have a decent warranty and survive 25000 miles a year. I've no doubt a P1 would do that (my favourite Scoob by the way), but I can't buy a new one of those, so the STI suits my needs perfectly.
Evo Magazine are right that ultimately the P1 is probably the best Scoob and dynamically better than an STI. However, would I actually notice that on a day-to-day basis? Unlikely. I also know that the newer car is better built (having owned classic and new shape Scoobs, there really is no comparison in that department). As an everyday car, the STI makes more sense for me. For other people it maybe different. If I was looking for a second car, then the P1 would be right up there.
I was impressed at how well the P1 did, but don't forget the car that was ranked above it - a Clio Williams! If you treat the first five cars (Ferrari, 2 Porsches, Zonda and an NSX-R) as fantasy cars, that most of us will not be likely to own, then the Clio and P1 did pretty well!

Chris,
Don't disagree with you mainly in that using it day to day, the new car is friendlier.
Not sure I agree with you better built theory.
I had a MY97 wagon for 4 years and now the P1 for almost 3, and as yet, nothing has gone wrong with either of them. I've never had a rattle, a bulb blow or anything. How much better could it be?
It also seems that since the classic was discontinued, customers are less satisfied with Scoobies. ie the JD power results.

The P1 is an STi!!!!!! an STi5 an Import STi5.
It was an STi5 before it was a P1 so how can a P1 be dynamically better than an STi
take an STi5 and change the spoiler, suspension remap the ecu then hey presto a P1.

Have you ever heard the expression DATED,well for me the P1 looked good in its day but it is around 4-5 years old now and looks it.
I'm sorry to play devils advocate but the Subaru has moved on and living in the past with what is an import with an IM warranty is silly.
It may handle and drive well but the interior is a joke and the styling is old hat.
But if you current owners like it then i'm happy for you.
Give me a UK STi 7-8 any day of the week.

I dont see the attraction in old cars, as for Daddy more like Gran Daddy.
Why do classic drivers always have a pop at the 01 onwards cars, they are so far ahead in build quality compared to the OLD classics.Take one for a drive before you pass comments and enjoy rattle free motoring.
I personally look at 01+ cars and think yeah they are nice and modern ish,but the classic is looking way to old, maybe its me, as i wont own a car from new for more than 3 years as i percieve them to be past it and i never intend to get to the stage where i need an MOT.

I agree that the P1 is really an TypeR that has been set up as a compromise for the UK roads. P1 enthusiasts read on.......
It has a predominatly UK wagon wiring loom (with rear wash wipe, uk buttons and stalks on the correct size), softer suspension springs and the 4dr STI drivetrain. Some of which most R drivers (like ME) would agree are the minus points of the original Jap car. I even had my 5th Gear extended to help motorway cruising.
Apart from that and a few cosmetic changes, its the same. And a very clever piece of marketing and reuse of the STI parts bin. 'Prodrive refine and rebadge'.
I have had my R for a long time and will probably sell soon and buy an STI7 or 8. Not because I really want to, but because its the newest option. (And becasue im agetting a 2.5 bottom end in the group buy and needed a 6speed box anyway ).

Hol, like the sound of the extended 5th....
Old cars.... I have a much older car & one a few years old - for me the Classic is just that - classic in the same way my Mk1 Golf GTi is not as good in some ways as my Mk4 Golf... but it is what it is. Good enough for me & puts a smile on my face...
Ah well as long as it's a subaru can't be that bad - nite all

I took the longer 5th out of my RA limited and installed the lower RA 5th, the big ratio jump of the limited ruined the cars gears spread for me. I have the original 5th gear set if anyone wants to change their typeR/RA into a softer cruiser.
The P1 is well below technically on the TypeR, and the TypeRA is a jump up again IMHO.
