Take advantage of exchage rates - performance parts from USA?
Have been looking to buy some parts for my car and have come across companies in the US selling parts quite cheap when you take into account the strong pound. For example:
IHI VF34 Turbo = $735/£407
Gruppe S Manifold = $399/£221
Exedy Organic Clutch Kit = $525/£291
Walbro 255 Fuel Pump kit = $100/£55
Prices would obviously be subject to delivery and customs charges but seems well worthwhile if buying a few bits.
Anybody been down this road? Is the customs charge a flat rate 17.5% or do some items vary?
Regards,
Bob

After looking into this I'm still unsure of how much import tax will be.
My shopping list
Fidanza Lightweight Flywheel $350 = £196
SPEC stage 2 clutch kit $410 = £230
Walbro Fuel Pump $105 = £59
Then add postage of say est $120 = £67
Then add import tax of ???
Then add VAT @17.5%
Grand total =
Just need to know that exact import duty?

Check with Customs and Excise online - there is an escalating duty being applied to specified US goods by the EU in retaliation for some dodgy trading practices on their part. The longer you leave it, the higher this duty will get - until such a point as the US back down. The risk to you is that car parts might be on the list.

10% of est total of £550 = £55 plus vat = £710.
Must be getting close? Assuming 10% import duty...cant be much more than that surely.
Have tried checking import duty online but cant find car parts listed.
Not sure if www.gruppe-s.com or www.subarustore.com send out gifts?

Hi
I import a lot of goods from the US.
All goods, new or used, are subject to Customs Duty and VAT according to their value and import tax classification.
At the moment the min is 5% and the max (for most goods) is 9%.
I usually pay 22.5% all in.
However I think the current exemption is £20 so if you can get them to value the goods at $25 then you usually dont get charged anything. Usually only any good on small packages.
Hope this helps.

22.5% = £673 which would mean that import tax is less than 5%?
Really want as accurate figure as possible as different people have experiences of wide ranging duty rates. Dont want any nasty shocks when products land.

There is no reason why you should be charged more than this?

Right. Assuming a max import duty of 9% (hopefully lower) my shopping list looks like this:
Fidanza Lightweight Flywheel $350 = £196
SPEC stage 2 clutch kit $410 = £230
Walbro Fuel Pump $105 = £59
Then add postage of say est $120 = £67
Then add import tax @9% = £49.68
Then add VAT @17.5% = £105
Grand total = £706
If purchased from UK:
Fidanza Lightweight Flywheel = £350
AP Organic Clutch = £475
Walbro Fuel Pump $105 = £100
Total = £925 (inc vat and possibly p&p)
Total saving if purchased from US = £224 after all taxes etc.
Seems well worth the little extra hassle.

Customs add the cost of delivery if not already added.
Then import duty at 4-9% depending on classification of goods and what country they come from, then + 17.5%vat.
The carrier then adds a handling fee which seems to be arbitrary.
Items from the U.S attract more duty than items from Hong Kong or Australia at present although that is not particularly relevant and parts for ancient, classic cars attract no duty. I think that means 50yrs old or something.
Charges are usually based on import documentation/invoice which is also used by the sender for insurance values.
Any consignment grossly undervalued and picked up by customs, then they will apply their own value and you could lose out substantially. These guys are not stupid.
