Defi's or SECS?
After a bit of advice.
Now that I've done all the engine mods that I want to do I'm thinking of monitoring the engine, but I'm not sure which way to go? defi's or SECS?
What are the pro's and con's of each, not to bothered about the looks (think they both look great) more interested in which is going to do the job best.
Thanks in advance

i have both, the ability to reset the ecu on the secs is worth its weight i gold if you are troubled with cel lights its great as it tells you the problem streight away ( think this is more usefull with a new age- I like the way it stores the peak boost as well - don't bother if you plan to read the figure as you go along as you will end up putting your car in a hedge
the defis look the dogs and are far better to read as you drive
if i didnt have a new age I would only have the defi's

Thanks for the replies guy's,
What im after is what's going to do the best job for monitoring the engine.
I wont be watching the gauges to much when im driving, but would like to know what peak figures are after i've been driving and possible something that will warn me while i'm driving if peak figures have been reached.

WRX Rich seems to have summed it up pretty well.
I have a SECS which I look at for the oil temp and pressure (seperate sensors needed).. Great for storing ECU codes (thanks de-cat), peak values etc but the boost readout is PANTS.
I have bought a boost gauge and a Knocklink which I think are better at looking at how the car is running. Mine's great thanks to Guru Bob...
Untill the SECS can have a real LCD display of analog gauges I'd go for the defi's and the Knocklink

My Defis (which I got from Nitosport incidentally) have the ability to store peak values, just like the SECS. You just hit the 'Peak' button whenever you want to see them and the dials swivel to max recorded position.
They also have the ability to record the last 45secs (ish) of engine activity time, if you want to hit 'Record' before boosting it round a track for instance.
Plus they look the DOGS!!
I must say I have also considered getting the SECS, just for the ECU reset ability, but thus far have been put off by how rubbish the display is (blocky graphics and impossible to read on a sunny day) --> when oh when will they come out with a decent graphic display I ask?

defis are far more expensive if you want to give anything like the same amount of info.
The vf display of the new secs monitor is great.
The wiring of the secs is also far easier and neater whereas the defis need you to plumb in and run wires for each of the functions it measures.
They look pretty but I consider them as gimmicky.
I would be inclinde to hang around for the secs touchscreen display which is rumoured to be similar to the skyline r34s display only far better and also touchscreen controlled.
That will look far cooler and be far more practical.
I am told by psi that they have arranged the hardware infrastructure for all their products to be modular meaning you could buy a secs monitor in the mean time with a view to adding the new display to it when it becomes available, apparently in summer.

Hers a few pics of my Defi BF Gauge kit (links into Defi Control unit II which isnt shown)
This is them in the off position (the flash of the camera illuminates them a bit but to the naked eye the dials look completley black.
This is a read out showing the peak values achieved
This the gauges switched on but idling
I have Oil Temp, Boost and Exhaust Gas Temperature. The only other one i'm going to get is Oil Pressure, i'll probably put this on the 'A' Pillar.
The egt is expensive as the probe goes 5mm away from the turbo in the up-pipe and i would only think about this if you have a full de-cat. If you are considering a full de-cat then get the egt done whilst the up-pipe is being done and you'll kill two birds with one stone. Otherwise go for the oil pressure.
Like the lads say, you can record 3 mins of data and playback. You can set your warning lights and buzzer to come on at any value and the control unit records your peaks for you and yes they do look the canines ********* especially at night
