Default subaru 6 speed

Has Subaru only made one single version of its 6 speed gearbox??
Does a version 7 Impreza has the same exact gearbox to that of a version 8?

Apparantly I have heard rumors about the fact that 6 speed gearbox with DCCD is different to a non DCCD gearbox. Maybe different gearsets or syncoros?

I have driven a car with a JDM gearbox w/o DCCD, and I have driven the USDM Sti with DCCD. I can tell you the shifter feel is very different. Who knows, perhaps the difference felt can be simply a different linkage design in the two cars.

I would love to fit a 6 speed box into my Type R but have been told that you lose the DCCD. Yet nobody can confirm if thats true mate.

There only seems to be one version of the casing, yes.

Please cut this "version 7/version 8" rubbish out! A 2002 model year STi Type UK has the same gearbox as a 2003 model year STi Type UK, while the 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 model year Japanese market STi GL's should share the same gearbox design.

Apparantly I have heard rumors about the fact that 6 speed gearbox with DCCD is different to a non DCCD gearbox.
Yeah, one of them has a DCCD and the other doesn't. It's not like there's one gearbox with DCCD and one gearbox without. The Japanese market cars have different ratios and drop-gears to the UK/European ones.

Maybe different gearsets or syncoros?
The design of the gearsets and synchros are largely the same. The only fundamental difference is the ratios. There is nothing preventing you fitting a DCCD in an STi Type UK gearbox, if that's what you're thinking. It's not like the DCCD and viscous 6MT gearboxes are a completely different design.

Exclamation

Greasemonkey,
Your expertise and Subaru knowlegde is unquestioned and I agree with the view of UK's dodgy MY's and STi7/8/9 numbers etc. I believe mine is a MY02 STi02UK not a MY02 STi7UK

I may be wrong but this Guy, SpecR1, is in America/Austriala type area he is talking

Please don't go hard on him, it's only terminology, like "Boot" = "Trunk", "Bonnet" = "Hood", "Crisp" = "Chip" & "french frie" = "Chip" etc.etc.LOL

but big thanks for giving your Technical reply

Sorry for being persistent.

Do you mean greasemonkey that the Type R DCCD that I got now will fit and work with a 6 speed box then.

I am not in the UK. Instead I live in Canada and I drive a Subaru with a jdm sti motor and 6 speed tranny. All I was concerned with was that my 6 speed has a significantly different feel compared to the 2.5L sti sold in North America. I decided to buy a shifter linkage off a 2.5 sti and will fit it to my car. This may or may not be the answer to difference felt in the gearboxes. Thanks everyone for your input.

No, don't think so STR. Apparently (although I'm going on what I've been told) the DCCD unit used in the six speed boxes is slightly different from the one used in the 5MT, and the two aren't interchangeable.

In 6th gear, a UK STi has a 24.5mph / 1000 revs ratio,
The JDM STi has a 22.7mph / 1000 revs in 6th.

So the JDM feels more frantic compared to the overdrive of the UK models.

There are 2 6MT ratio sets, the JDM and RoW, RoW have higher 5th and 6th. You have three diff options (one of which is DCCD or DCCD-A) and two front diff options, LSD or no LSD.

The JDM 6MT you perchased may have come with a quickshift, it certainly has stiffer bushings than the US STi 6MT (yes, I've driven both too)

Cheers

There are mods to the guts of the gearbox on JDMs between the B and C revisions of the STi. The changes were made to allow for the added stress of the DCCD-A function shifting the torque about (sometimes rather aggresively it seems, you'll find the shafts at the rear have been beefed up as on GC Type R/RAs), and are mostly restricted to materials according to the engineers I've spoken to. No change on gearing though.

And the C revision box did get a revised shifter to reduce some of the squishy feel noted on the first versions.
