Bug Eye WRX Life Expentancy?
Im looking around for A WRX UK300 (hopefully PPP ) as ive now got my heart set on one. i just wondered how long they can and usually go on for before serious repairs are needed and also when the cambelt needs replacing.
Plus of course anything in general which you think i should know before taking the plunge.
Cheers

Don't mean to be rude, but how long is a piece of string. If you stick strictly to servicing schedules (plus extra oil changes), warm up and cool down, and drive sympatheticaly they should go on as long, if not longer than any other car. They didn't win all those JD Power titles for nothing. If however, you boot it from clap cold, hammer it for an hour and pull up at the pub and rush in for a pint without cooling her, don't bother with interim servicing and fluid level checks and hoon around on full boost all day in a series of traffic light GP's it won't last 6 months.

And, even if you do stick to the service schedule and take all the good advice, there's still a chance that it'll go bang - my engine spun a big-end bearing last month at just 61k miles. The best insurance against this sort of thing is an extended warranty, IMHO.

Cam belt is every 60k on newer cars (MY00 onwards) or 45k on older ones - cost of that service is about £450ish at a main dealer.
An engine rebuild following bearing failure ranges from about £1800 to £4000+ depending on who you ask. I was slightly fortunate in that I was able to talk Subaru UK into providing the parts for free, given the circumstances - but I still had to pay for labour, and that alone cost about as much as getting a recon block fitted elsewhere. Cost was £1780, but that included a brand new bottom end and turbo.

There's a lot of confusion around - mine was done at 45k, then I moved house and went to a new dealer who said it shouldn't have been necessary and that 60k was the correct interval for my car. European imports have, I believe, different recommendations again - although they're the exact same car.
Certainly you should have the belt done at 60k if it wasn't done already at 45k, but check with your dealer or the service manual for the car.
Personally I've never, ever heard of a cambelt failure on an Impreza. Engines usually let go for reasons that are much more obscure and hard to prove post mortem
