Default How slow are the non turbo'd scoobys?

I must have seen so many impreza's today without a scoop, does that mean they havent got a turbo?

if they havent got a turbo, wouldnt they be really slow? is there a point of getting one without a turbo. minus points in being heavy, no selling points...

confused by it all really!

Cool

just because an imprezza has no turbo dosn't mean its slow>>>>

you can have just as much fun with 110 bhp as 220

roadholding and a good chassis / package = lots of fun through the twistys

sure a turbo would be nice to give it the midrange punch... but you carry the risk of too much power going in and ooops a daisy coming out!!

Mart

2.0 normally aspirated...

it says impreza on the log book!!!

I do not think they are slow compared to average 2 litre non-turbo, but once you taste the turbo performance, it would be hard to go back.

I had my MY01 WRX serviced recently they loaned me a non-turbo for the day, what an eye-opener that was. You get so used to that extra kick, that I found the non-tubo almost dangerous. But I guess it is something you would get used to very quickly.

You probably learn to get more out of the car in a NA; it's too easy to let the turbo do the hard work for you.

Anyone that's seen Jon (Rusty Festa) drive his (now former i believe) sport will tell you that they can be pretty quick.

Got myself a Blobeye GX for the day
The throttle response is good, but thats about all i can say really about the power. I can't really compare it to my Eibached, Tek'd, de-catted MY99 other than to say, it doesn't rattle and you have to stick your head out of the window to check it's still running
I think it's a big improvement over the Bugeye i was loaned last time. I'd love a crack in a Blob WRX or STi, to see how they compare to mine

OK, the sports don't compare performance wise to a wrx, but as someone has said already they do handle well throught the twisties. On a long motoryway cruise at 80mph I got 34mpg. They are nice cars but could do with 140 - 150 bhp, and at 3k5 rpm + they do take off rather well.

I used to have a NA impreza and i have to say it was a refreshing change to the mundao and vectras that i used to get in the company car list.

The car (with 17's on) handled superbly and i do recall that in a promo when the bugeye GX came out, Richard Burns beat a stock WRX in a GX with 17's on, on a track. Okay so it may of been Granny driving the WRX but he still whooped the WRX.

I had one for twelve months and i couldn't fault it, it still has a boxer engine y'know and as the peeps above say, you do get to learn how to drive and handle an AWD car.

The downside.......theres only one...............I lasted 12 months before i chopped it in for a WRX

ive got a sport & a wrx. they are both great, using the sport on the more frequent long journeys to work as my heavy right foot costs way more on the wrx. the accelaration out of danger is just as great so "sports being dangerous" is total cr@p. I take just as much of a risk stretching out that 'longer than normal' overtaking maneouver & feel just as confident as i would in the wrx. I could say that its probably my driving ability but as Mart said you get the power timing wrong and it can get messy. i feel sometimes i push the sport much more than the wrx but dont get that twitchyness.

blah blah zzzzzzzzzzzz what the **** do you know anyway. I dont understand the elitism in this place sometimes. A scooby is a scooby and should be appreciated by all not slagged. People have these cars for a reason just as they dont have a ferrari for the same reasons...

Anyways youve only got a rb5 thats sh1te in comparison to the 22b

big deal it can go fast in a straight zzzzz its all about handling and standard for standard the sport can hold its own.

Totally agree with InvisibleMan

They are a great car as NA's go. It's like comparing a 2.0 zetec focus with an RS.

FFS what do people want for circa 16K new. Go and see if you can get another car for that price, thats a family car and AWD with a tried and trusted engine..........you wont!

Nope still not convinced, there still ****e, unless your a farmer who wants to drive around his field with a boot full of hay, then yes the awd system is a plus!

Driven this model quite a few times, and they are extremely underpowered and thats comparing them to any other ordinary 2.0l family car I've driven!

Yes they do handle, but so does a ford focus as for the full economy its ridulous, the RB5 uses half as much fuel on the same journey!

Still everyones entitled to there own opinion!

RB5193, I partly agree with you on the power front, however from a sport owner, you really need to be carefull how much you slag the base models off, the only differances between mine and yours are the turbo and I have 2pot instead of 4 pot brakes. Other than that they are basically the same!!!!

Standard UK Turbos are understeery cars that move fairly quickly. A Sport is much the same, only it moves slower.

Nowhere near enough power and the AWD robs the car of any get up and go it might have. Can't see the point myself.

Yes they are faster, double the price of the RB5, but only have two doors, which would be a nightmare if you had "dustbin lids"

Still, yeh nice motor, but ask yourself wouldn't you rather have a Litchfield T25?

I wouldn't say that much, the chassis the same as is the shell, so 2 components constitute a totally different car by you then?. The only differance is to the power and the weight I presume. However as for being slow, considering 4x4's loose up to 25% throught the transmission, they don't do badly. Considering every other car in the same price bracket is about the same power and 2wd!

i think is a good first step in to scoobyism.
a lot cheaper to run than my my93 jdm wrx!
i'm saving at the mo to get my girfriend a 1.6 2wd impreza, then in a years time move up a notch etc etc.

Plenty of worse cars than an Impreza Sport. 9ish seconds to 60 isn't slow anyway, unless you're used to faster stuff.
Why bother slagging them off anyway. Yours may be faster, but nobody pretended that a sport special was fast. It's just a different car. Like comparing a BMW M5 to a 530d. Doesn't mean the 'lesser' one is ****...

-rant over-

Point of getting a non-turbo, to answer the question, could be:
- 1 - better fuel economy (slightly).
- 2 - Lower insurance
- 3 - can't be ar5ed with Eliteism

Well as a current MY98 sport owner, and previously a MY97 turbo owner. i love my sport, i loved my turbo, yet the turbo was just too expensive to run as an everyday car, insurance, fuel, etc. The sport however has enough power to keep me happy, grips like f**k round the twistys and sounds bloody good too!
and compared to other 2litre cars, it isnt slow, i`ve had enough so i should know!

Also i`m sick of people slagging off lesser scooby owners for not having a turbo, i dont see P1 owners slagging off RB5 owners for having a slower, lesser model. Or even brand new T25 owners slagging off everyone!!!!

its horses for courses...

I dont recall Subaru stating ...

Its only an impreza if its got a turbo!!

after dropping from a saab 900 turbo 175bhp to a gl 110 bhp

yes i readily agree i miss the mid range punch,,

however i dont miss the wallet emptying when i used to fill it up with petrol

It didnt have the same handling characterisitcs as the scoob, it wallows in

corners and was sluggish below 3000rpm

my wifes 216 gti tc 130 bhp (1600cc) goes like stink, but gets skittish in

corners at speed, and always feels like its sliding away..

yet the scoob just sticks like glue, and makes me grin all the time...

110 bhp awd good chassis low c og scooby burble

good for me

just goes to show that many here just like the 4wd and the turbo. they don't really care for subarus or imprezas.

Not saying that's right or wrong. Some people are also subaru and impreza fans too. I think a large proportion are just fans of particular models (i.e. the turbo ones).

The N/A was about 1st though Don't forget yer roots

yeah thats the other thing, a std sport has a nice flat4 growl to it (well mine certainly does & kinda sounds better than me wrx) whereas the turbo is whiney as you hear the turbo going, so you need a big growly exhaust to compensate.

then next youll be like, 'ah but youve only got a scoobysport exhaust that ****e ive got a hks thats like sooooo much better....'
