Wink UK STi Just a JDM WRX Discuss!

Taken from another thread..thought it needed clarification!
"I had heard also that the UK stis were the same as wrxs in japan, and that the engines were thus not the same as jdm spec sti. Apparently they red line lower."
We've all just wasted £9-10K!!!!!!!!!

Buy a JDM Sti then

It is natural that their home territory is going to get everything first (the 2.5L for the USDM was an exception) and if you look at the current specification JDM Sti they get, amongst other things, a quick steering rack, digital dash, equal length manifold headers, revised bridgestone tyres, DCCD-A etc all as standard.

In all likelihood we will start to see this filtering across to the Uk on forthcoming Sti models, esp things like the DCCD (one of the big selling points of the WR1).

But then, if you are going to wait for technology, you will never buy anything. It's always going to be superseded. You make a purchasing decision based upon what is available now, and in the very near future.

AFAIK it is true that, as with all previous JDM / UK Sti comparisons, the JDM has a higher specification internals and can rev higher, but surely that is not why you buy the car over a WRX? Surely you are purchasing the image, the (warranted) extra power increase, the significantly better brakes, bigger turbo etc etc?

errrr Quick steering, re070 tyres DCCD-A and HID lights are all options on the JDM STI.......

But Twin scroll turbo / headers, different cams, crank, pistons, conrods, induction and exhaust, suspension / chassis better. rear washwipe, better instruments, close ratio box, strut brace (?) are all standard!

Here tis then.

"I had heard also that the UK stis were the same as wrxs in japan,
That's bollocks.

and that the engines were thus not the same as jdm spec sti.
That's true, but it's hardly headline news. There have always been specification differences between Japanese market Imprezas and the equivalent UK market model.

Apparently they red line lower."
Again, hardly headline news.

We've all just wasted £9-10K!!!!!!!!!
If that comment is based on the JDM WRX=STi Type UK, it's obviously incorrect, as the underlying assumption is incorrect.

For a start, the JDM WRX's have variable valve timing, something the UK STi (or WRX) doesn't have, IIRC

That's incorrect REV. The JDM WRX's do not have variable valve timing (aka AVCS). The STi Type UK, however, does, as do the JDM STi's.

With my 307bhp on tap MY02 STI Type UK Prodrive, I ain't too bothered about a few bits of internal being slightly different spec.

I wouldn't be too worried about it Steve, afterall, we're all gonna get Type 25's soon anyway.... Then it won't matter at all!!! LOL

See ya soon... And enjoy the great motor you have dude!!

that was me who said those original things. I confess to not knowing much about the new shape car.

greasemonkey,

to my knowledge until the new shape car there hasn't been an equivalent jap and uk car apart from the 22b, the differences of which are negligible.

Since the JDM wrx do have a lower red line and avcs, is does look like the UK sti with its lower rev limit has the same engine as the jap spec wrx but with its manifold painted red. Again another con by IM and unfair in my opinion.

LOL @ Si, Group Buy (Well 2 of us anyway) on Type 25 it is early next year then! (Mind you it'll have moved on to the Spec X vs Type 28 by then!!!).
Why oh why are we all shelling out our hard earned on these crap 300+ BHP UK cars?

Do you think we really could get a group buy discount.... ? Now that would be great! My brum brum will be changed early next year, and T25 is well up the list of contenders... Would look a pretty sight at the Bridge, umpteen T25's in the car park... LOL

Start saving now...

I dont know why you spend your hard earned cash on 300+bhp uk cars as they dont start life as a 300bhp car, only a measly 262bhp one so modify a JDM car to the same spec and you still have a better car (its still better in standard form v modied uk form too )

Tony
PS, ive driven both, i own one, and its not a uk car btw

You don't say!!

What is all this "This is better than that, because of X, Y and Z". Be happy with what you own, and let everyone else enjoy theirs!

FWIW, I have owned 2 UK spec Impreza now, chances are my third one will be a JDM Spec-C, but I don't need people telling me that mine is inferior in the meantime. These cars are fantastic, regardless of which side of planet earth they were intended for...

Sorry, Sat morning rant over... Back to Soccer-AM

Ive also owned 2 impreza's, the first being an MY00 PPP'd car, i looked around and looked at the UK STi, it was good, not as good as it should have been though, no where near as good as my nice new Spec C but then again, the Spec C isnt for everyone (i dont mind, ive lived with vehicles much harsher than the Spec C )
The biggest point is, is that the UK will never get the sort of car it deserves, for that you will always be buying grey imports.

I never said that the uk car was inferior i just said that the JDM car was better (you said it was inferior )
Like ive said, ive driven both the UK and JDM STi's, i preferred the JDM car, some people 'may' prefer the uk sti, but then again they probably havnt driven its JDM equivelent

Exclamation

Pointless argument really... Like I said, never had a JDM, never driven one either. So I am in no position to say that one is better than the other! And I didn't!

I have owned a Uk turbo and now an RA

They both have there good and bad points

The Uk was user friendly, quick, predictable and fun to drive almost like a nice pet family dog.

The RA on the other hand is like a wild animal, powerful but scarey
