Default Whistling Door Mirror Anyone???

I have a 2001 WRX UK at EXACTLY 40mph my door mirror whistles in the wind!! prob is that I always have my window down, & it is starting to niggle me now! If I fold the mirror in a bit, the whistling stops!. Anyone know of a fix for this? (Apart from removing the door mirror! lol)

I remember reading somewhere (IWOC?) that some classic imps have the same problem. Memory is a bit hazy, but I think the fix was to seal the gap between the mirror body and the bit that's fixed to the door with some gaffa tape, or summat. I think it was done by part-folding the mirror and sticking the tape to both sides.

As above, if that don't work, drive at either 39 or 41 mph

When the mirror will be sent for wind noise testing, there will usually be a set of noise parameters the mirror will be assessed at.

the mirror will be assesed with the window closed. if you have the window open, the airflow over and around the mirror will be altered and will give a different set of results.

how much do you have to move the mirror to eliminate the whistle??

I only have to move it in about half an inch, bloody annoying!

Fixed mine by putting a piece of double sided tape (the thick stuff you can buy on a roll from Maccess etc) on the inside edge of the mirror( the bit you can see when you fold the mirror in). This takes up virtually all of the gap and on mine stopped the noise you describe. Hope that makes sense/helps.

If the cars in warrenty take it back

if not masking tape (black ) or similar over either the front horizontal breakface will give a cure...

trouble is unless there is a specific wind noise critera that was used for drive and ride appraisal , it is usually done by jury appraisal by the mirror manufacturer and the oem... and an average is applied..

i spent a week looking at a similar problem in Mexico, they only have the problem because they have virtually no traffic on there roads, where as the european plants have busy roads and lots of ambient noise...

we did come up with an engineering fix and all is now well..

Wink

The reason the door mirror whistles - is . . . . .

Because it doesn't know the words !

Sorry - couldn't resist it.
