Are insurance companies confused !!!
Whilst obtaining insurance quotes for various Impreza's (WRX and STi), I thought I would investigate the possiblity of having the PPP fitted. In most instances this was resulting in a significant increase in the insurance premium. This was because the PPP was treated as a modification even though fitted by Subaru (sometimes at the time of purchase). Some insurance companies would not even provide cover for cars with such modifications.
In the last couple of weeks I have noticed most insurance companies include the WR1 on the web sites. Is this car not fitted with PPP after registration by a Subaru dealer , surely making it a modification. Some insurance companies which would not provide cover for a WRX or STi with PPP are now providing cover for WR1's.
Are they confused ?

Hmmm, very strange. In this case, the insurance company may think the "standard" car is at time of first registration, before PPP is fitted. The PPP is then fitted after registration making it a modification. Interesting. Can someone in the insurance industry check this out, what BHP is listed for the WR1?

Sti=265ps
Sti+ppp=305ps or +13.4% power increase.
You can't buy a WR1 without the ppp and so Subaru have issued the 320ps power figure only.

BTW it's cheaper for me to insure a WR1 (320ps)new than insure my STI with ppp (305ps)through the likes of Admiral and eleflump...some companies just take the pee.

The bottom line is that it doesn't matter whether the ins. co. is confused or not. They can quote whatever they like for cover and its up to you to decide whether to take them up on the offer.
No doubt their argument will be along the lines of "a driver who modifies a car for more performance is more likely to use it and have an accident than one who buys a powerful car in the first place". Hence higher premiums for safety mods like improved brakes
