A mate from work has a CUP and they are quite rapid, But i've taken him for a few spins in my WRX and he's suprised how much quick the WRX is. It pulls a lot better in all gears. I don't know how the Clio kept up with the STI, Must of been a Standard UK WRX.

Have to say I had a similar encounter with a Clio Cup in my 96 WRX wagon and it was a similar story. But I suppose if you take into account power loss through tranny and weight etc. then they will be closely matched on the road.
Mind you, they are still French, and that is not a good thing, and my mk1 Golf 16v would mince one.
German and Jap cars are the best!!!

Cant understand all this "my cars quicker than yours"
It may well be, perhaps the guy in front isnt much of a driver, perhaps he wasnt giving it death, perhaps this guy is a better driver than Micahael Schumacher, who knows. Does it matter. The slow guy in front may have a bigger dick! Now that could be useful.
But what I do know is that racing on the public highway is a really serious offence, it often leads to severe accidents, which may well involve other road users.
I may well be an old fart but I enjoy giving my STi one but on quite country roads with no other traffic about.
If you want to be competitive do it on a track or a sprint course. Much safer!

I have recently taken a 172 for a test drive (for the missus) and I thought it was pretty rapid, setting off wasnt great but once it got underway it was quite impressive. I wouldnt have one over a scoob, cos they rule .
If I couldnt have the scoob or an R32 then Id probably go for one.
On the subject of like for like against an STi, I cant really see it (I realise it wasnt a 172 BTW)... well, I suppose you had to be there

My girlfriend used to own a 172 Cup...You'd be v. suprised how quick they are when you rev the t*ts out of them.
Afterall, they have similar weight and construction properties to a baked bean can!
My car's quicker than yours - so there! (LOL)

But who bloody cares about which tyres are longest wearing, who bloody cares about what exhaust is the loudest, who bloody cares about what wheels look best, who bloody cares about what insurance is cheapest, who bloody cares about how long you can go sideways for, who bloody cares aboutvanything to do with bloody cars?
Just chill out and let folk talk about what they want if it's not causing offence, I'm sure you were young once too.
P.S. I do not condone racing on a public highway in any way.

Mods why don't you recommend another category - "You'll never guess what I challenged the other day ...."
- Are you geting old?
- Do you drive a Mondeo Turbo Diesel?
- As long as they don't descend into abuse - this is just harmless fun

I got wasted by 3 builders in a Transit this morning........... !!
It cost the driver 3 points & £60 to do it though!!!
It helps when you know where plod often site their mobile cameras.
