Question Impreza WR1 looses out to an MG!

Hi All,

Not read it myself yet but Autocar has the WR1 in a group test this week with......

Vauxhall Monaro
BWM 330Ci Sport
MGZT260
Impreza WR1
Evo FQ-330
Audi A3 3.2 V6
Megane 225.

MGZT was group test winner!!!

Anyone read it yet? How did the WR1 fair?

Cheers

Not as well as the Evo... About 2 secs per lap down.

was it down to overall speed round a track ??

you cant compare a car to say it was 0.0007843 seconds faster round a track and call it the best car ever can you ???

If so a 1971 mini with a Honda V Tek engine may be up there ??? LOL !!!!

I wouldnt read too much into this guys and gals.

The MGZT260 is a 260bhp V8 and does 0.60 in 6.2 seconds and 155mph Top Speed, according to Auto car see here http://www.autocar.co.uk/RoadTest_Summary.asp?RT=206345

Compared to the WR1 which Autocar says is 0.60 in 4.3 seconds and Top Speed is 155mph. See here http://www.autocar.co.uk/FirstDrive_....asp?RT=207716

I cannot see how Performance wise the MG wins??????????
The MG also if your interested had a worse MPG? So again very confused.

The other cars are fairly good but the VX Monaro for instance, but to say the WR1 looses to an MG is well untrue. Autocar must not like Imprezas obviously

Thumbs up

There's a vid here: mms://wms.streamingplus.net/haymarke..._club_512k.wmv
of the cars in the test. Buying on sound alone I would be looking at the Scoob Evo or Monaro. Luverly.

I recently drove the MGZT260 which is why I put up the thread, I'll have to get a copy of Autocar in the morning.

The 0-60 and bhp figures don't look all that good but it's how the car goes and feels and the figures don't do it justice. The lunge forward on the big V8's torque at any revs is astounding and the engine note sounds far better than the video. Totaly different driving experience than a Scoob or an Evo.

The MGZT260 was developed by Prodrive and I was lucky enough to spend a day there thanks to Mr Webmaster a few years back and they had the early development car running around the test track. It had open exhausts at the time and sounded awesome.

I don't intend to buy one just been looking forward to the finished car after seeing it in it's early development. Isn't there supposed to be a supercharged 385bhp version on the horizon?

Cheers

The MG wins because of the overall package, the interior and the fact that it's english! The Evo is the best car in the group though...around the track it beats everything by a considerable amount, and the WR1 is the closest to it with nearly 2 seconds in it (laps were under 1 minute so it's quite a chunk)...basically they like all the cars except the S3 for some reason.

lap times are as follows (slowest to fastest)

Monaro - 56.35
MG - 56.05
S3 - 55.90
Renault 225 megane - 55.65
BMW 330ci - 55.40
WR1 - 53.40 (noticeably faster than the rest)
MR320 - 51.65 (just think what the 340 will be like)

Thanks mate.

To be honest lap times don't bother me, I've been to loads of trackdays but only driven on track a few times so a car being slightly faster on track doesnt bother me.
I think track times are getting silly, 5th Gear even did timed laps between a Transit and Merc Sprinter.

It's the same with the Scoob, jap spec suspension is more suited to track use but give me UK suspension anyday probably quicker with the state of UK roads.

You pays your money, etc. etc.

I read the report today.............I must admit it had more twists than the test track. There are just too many contributers (writers), all with slightly different opinions and writing styles............In fact, even after reading the report I was suprised by 'the verdict'. It seems like it was slapped in to fill some space.

The Evo was clearly the best track car, as suggested by the figures. Yet, it should be noted that the WR1 was tested first and the writer suggests that he found it difficult to beat its' lap time in the EVO (in fact at first he couldn't)...............it implies he tried a lot!!

Does this mean that it's easier to get good times with the WR1 straight away, whereas you have to practice in an EVO??

..........I wonder if after all that trying in the EVO he could have actually made all the other cars go round faster??..............was he trying to help (make) the EVO win?? (on track).

....as for the MGZT 260 being group test winner, well I like it for what it is.......but give me a Scooby or an EVO anyday!!

EVO magazine (the one with the modded STi's article) had the MG 260 vs EVO 260 (the new 'low power' one), and the EVO one that one!

Autocar hate Scoobs - look what they said about the P1

also think mags like to get a 'controversial' result, to sell mags!

tend to agree with above track time comments - programmes like Fifth gear always just thrash about a track, even in budget cars like Kias and Protons for gods sake.

When it comes down to Scoob V's Evo it's always going to be a big battle because they are very similar cars.

Not to sure how you compare an Evo and an MGZT because they are totaly different and it will come down to personal choice and use. You wouldn't buy the MGZT as a weekend toy and track day car and you wouldn't buy an Evo as a mile muncher.

EVO mags comparison based on cost and bhp, IIRC.

yeah, different cars really, but they had to chose one - and they chose the Evo, whereas Autocar chose the ZT.

Just shows they have different opinions and/or differing agendas to flog mags.

Its like film critics, how can you ever agree when it depends on your OWN taste and personality. I take any of it with a pinch of salt. I read a review in Jap car comparing the EVO 8 with the STi8, and it was a good balanced factual review. The only way they could decide between them was that on one corner, the scoob didnt feel as well planted. And that shows how good they both are! I sometimes think EVO / Top Gear / Autocar just say bad things for the attention

well i looked at the video and only 2 cars looked under full control, the evo and the WR1.

I know the others were under control but when I'm belting round some back roads I dont fancy my **** end nipping out and slaughtering the horse and rider trotting along in the other direction (and yes i have come across 2 sets of horses over the past few weeks and I live in london).

Looking at the list, the WR1 and EVO jump out at you like a flasher in the woods Wouldn't even think about the others, but horses for courses (excuse the pun)

Recent identical test in auto express put a standard STI, (may have been ppp) top over MGZT260, EVO and BMW 330, the all round appeal and price of the STI i think put it top.

they should have a test track based on the real world for smaller cars. eg stop line, couple of roundabouts, nasty road surfaces traffic lights etc. Lots of stopping and starting. Be more relevant to people.

Have to say the above speaks volumes for a 4 door saloon!

EVO tested the 260 and MG and IMHO long journeys I'd take the MG as it looks like a comfy sofa and for B road weekend hacks I'd take the 260. I think each car does a different job but they both have performance oily bits.

Totally agree, the anti-MG bandwagon is an easy one to jump onto, but the ZT260 is a good car. I recently had one for a day, and I thought it was a great car. I defy ANY genuine car lover to not get a great big cheesy grin when tailsliding round a roundabout with a V8 singing away !

But EVOs\WR1s are VERY different animals, and shouldn't really be compared to a ZT260 - certainly not on a track.

I would rather live with a ZT260 everyday than the others, but I'd much rather be in an EVO\WR1 come the weekend.

I care not for the anti-MG brigade either, I value a car on it's merits once I've driven it. The ZT260 is a great car, the EVO is a great car, the WR1 is a great car

Matt
