Default Extended Subaru Warranty

I've had a MY99 Turbo since new and it's 5 years old in July. It's got no mods and done almost 60000. I've only every needed tyres and brakes replaced, other than that no problems.

Subaru have just written to offer a one year warranty extension for £420.

Anyone had any good or bad experiences with Subaru extended warranties ? Is it worth it ? I'm not doing many miles just now so no point in replacing the car. Are there any common problems with a classic turbo of this age and mileage ? It gets driven hard at times but never been on the track.

You should be on extended now shouldnt you? 3 years then extended for 2? I had no problems with the extended warrenty... Its piece of mind but i'm yet to find a scoob to break down

I did have a few gaskets and bushes replaced at the 60k mark and that was all covered (job was worth about £250)

Its a tricky one....

I've been on extended warranty for the past two years but never needed to use it.

I've got a 2year/max 60Kmiles extension on the warranty on my MY00 scoob. Wasn't cheap... but it seems as if I should have saved my money - there's rust bubbling up under the leading edge of the roof, but IM's immediate reaction is "that's not covered by the warranty"... and this is on a 4 year old car which used to be owned by IM themselves, mind you. So just bear in mind it might not cover everything you would expect...

My previously reliable MY00 suffered a big-end failure at 61,200 miles and needed a new engine. It was out of warranty

Get the extension...

bodywork claims such as rust wont be covered IMHO unless you take out the bodywork option at each service?

For me, substitute the words in the above quote from Andy:-

MY99 for MY00
63000 for 61200
Thank goodness it had the Extended Warranty

Unless you are really struggling to afford it or are not intending to keep up FSSH then its a bargain if anything unexpectedly goes pop. I've had 5 other Subarus that were generally reliable, but I'd still buy the warranty again.

Sounds like the warranty extension is a good idea then. I think I'll go ahead with it.

We decided not to extend the warranty on our MY99 Turbo after 5 years because it had done over 60,000 miles in 5 years and seemed reliable. However, a few months later 5th gear started crunching, which cost us £750 to get fixed.

Previous to that we had the lambda probe replaced under warranty.

My MY00 dined out on its gearbox at 40k, and it was standard then....get the warranty, you're lucky to have the option!

If you are keeping the car, get the extension on the warranty BUT MAKE SURE YOU TAKE IT OUT BEFORE YOU REACH 60,000miles. Sorry don't mean to shout, but I got stung big time when my engine on my MY00 went bang. The warranty extension was completed and entered with the mileage recorded at 60,032, and as a result the warranty I had wasn't the full Subaru warranty, but a sort of "subaru proven" warranty which doesn't have the same level of cover. It cost me big time

See your dealer straight away, - I don't know if the warranty option have now changed, but it is worth it, even just for peace of mind

Edited to add - not sure how the fact that your car is 5 years old affect things after the initial 3yr 60,000 warranty, again check with your dealer

I renewed my warranty last week just before the car reached 60k, however, the warranty is titled ' Subaru Proven Renewal Warranty'. I was told on the phone it didn't cover bodywork but had the same cover for mechnical and electrics. Haven't received the paperwork yet though.

Gareth, Can you let me know why your warranty didn't cover your engine failure, please ?

The reason was that in order to extend the full warranty cover the extension must be taken out before the car is 3 years old or has done 60,000 miles. After either of those have passed you get the "proven" warranty which doesn't offer the complete level of cover. As your car is 5 years old I suspect that is the same warranty. Some parts (I can't remember which) were covered under this warranty, but it was still expensive to repair, whereas I though I wouldn't have to cough up. All for the sake of 30 odd miles

Best check exactly what the warranty covers and what it won't...at least then you can make a discission based on your annual mileage etc. Doing the high mileage that I do the warranty is essential...I won't be making the same mistake with the extented warranty on my STi8 !!!!
