Expensive day

Expensive day
I have a MY00 which is only a couple of months away from the dreaded 90,000 mile service (it's the biggy). What i can't decide is to do it myself and loose the stamp in the book, or carry on with the dealer service. The price i have had is £588 all in with a cambelt, and with discount it is £528 all in, which i don't think is bad. What do you think it would cost to get all the fluids and do this service yourself, apart from the cambelt which i would have to get done somewhere.
The desicion is waying up the cost saving against the stamp in the book, also would there be any cost saving.
Thanks for any help.
James.

I'd pay the dealer to do it mate.
At the end of the day if you get the dealer to do it it may cost you more in the short term but when you sell the car you may get more for it as a result of having a complete set of stamps.
Just my 2p worth but I'd pay more for a car with a complete FSSH
Nathan..

hello fella, I think it depends on how long you are going to keep the car,
if its a long time then I would suggest that you do it yourself and keep reciepts for parts/oil etc, or if you are going to sell in the next year or so, then I would suggest getting it done by the dealer, so the resale value would be slightly more

I presume it's due your mileage coz if i'm not mistaken the 90K is due circa 6 years from new.
If your fully stamped up to this point in time IMO you'd be wise to continue but at the end of the day it's down to personal choice.

approx prices for diy job
oil £20
oil filter £5
plugs £25
antifreeze £10 (if its changed)
brake fluid £10 (if its changed)
air filter £10
cambelt £40 (may need new tensioner about £120)
may as well do aircon and alternator belt as well about £15 the pair
even if you have to buy nice tools to do it you are looking at £200 tops
about 8 hours work on your own taking it easy wih plenty of coffee/bacon sarnie breaks
you then know the work has been done and to what standard also if you keep the bills/take photos of the work done/in progress you shouldnt loose much if any from the resale value
especially as its so easy to have a stamp made up to do service books and the like if the work is done or not(if that makes sense-cowboy dealers etc)
personally id sooner see signs of work and reciepts than a stamped up book

ok gearbox oil £15 will also cover rear diff
fuel filter £8
go to a factor with a list that long and ask for discount
should be in the region of 15-20%
makes the savings look even better then
out of interest if labour costs are about £700 per year do you think the resale value difference with/ without stamps would be that much?

Well, just to vent some anger, I put my car into a dealers for a service (82,500 miles)and it suffered big end failure 9 hours later. MMMMMM could not have been my fault though - yeah right you incompetent *****!! I have heard that some real enthusiasts do not even use dealerships. Your choice mate but one thing is for sure, if I did not get mine serviced at the dealership, I would have saved money on servicing and would not have to get a new engine now! That said, on paper, the service loks much better and definately adds value. Just make sure the mongos do it properly.
