Default Just how long do these Impreza Turbos last then?

My Scoobie is now 4 years+ and on 50,000miles, its well known that I treat my cars with sympathy and the utmost respect. I drive fast - but only when the conditions are right, both engine and road!

My brakes are all original - as is every other non-service item!

Everything seems to be lasting really well, nothing has fallen off, nothing has ceased to work, everything does what it did when new.

Now, I know that these cars have legendary reliability ......... but, what should I be looking for between the 50k and 100k miles?

How long do un-stressed and looked after turbos last?

One magazine says that the driveshafts need replacing mid-life (at about 50k miles) - whats all that about then?

Injectors, how long do these go on working?

Someone, somewhere, must have had a Scoobie for the 50k+ mileages - what went wrong?

It'll go for 200k if well looked after, regular oil changes, warmed up and warmed down - you've got a long way to go.

Sulli, MY98 turbo, 100k, on the 20th oil change

I am on my third Impreza Turbo (currently 40k) but I have driven 170k in my last two cars. NOTHING has ever broken or gone wrong of any note.

The two exceptions are a gearbox sensor (picked up at service) and an Oxegen sensor replaced under warranty when my current car stuttered slightly on a trailing throttle.

But on neither occasion did the car actually fail to start or run.
If your car is serviced properly and fairly standard nothing should need replacing( e.g driveshafts) for many many miles to come.

My last impreza did 60,000 trouble free miles in 30 months.

The current one has done over 10,000 miles in 6 months, but none in last 6 weeks as it is in a dealeship with a blown engine.

The dealers customer service is non-existant, Subarus is not much better.

The car might be excellent whilst it goes, but if it stops then it appears to be a nightmare. Quite off-putting

I reckon you might be needing some new pads soon

Non service items I got through in 93k miles:

5 sets of tyres (original RE010s, Pirelli PZeros, 3 sets of Toyos)
5 sets of front pads (originals, EBC Greens, Mintex 1155s, EBC Reds, Pagid RS42 Blues)
3 sets of discs (originals, Black Diamond, Godspeed)
2 sets of rear pads (originals, Godspeed)
1 clutch @ ~80k (Helix)
1 rear diff oil seal (£10 part, £140 labour )
1 set of dampers @~60k (bought a second-hand set with 100 miles on from the BBS)
Exhaust was on its way out when I replaced it with the Afterburner @about 80k too

My Wagon's coming up to the 90,000 service. It's a brilliant car. In the year and a bit that I've had it, I've had to do the normal servicing, plus a faulty MAF sensor when I first bought it and brakes all round. The car I got rid of needed all the brakes doing, so I don't see it as a fault. I got a good price at the time. I've heard that the wheelbearings and the turbo may wear out, but the car has never broken down in the time that I've had it.

No wheel bearings for me, though PTMW! seemed to get through a few, IIRC.

Somewhere I've seen 130k miles claimed, but I've never seen a higher mileage mentioned - can anyone here beat 130,000 miles? So far most of you are admitting to less than 100k miles, but ANY modern car should get that far. H*ll, my old 1.3 Peugeot had done 96k miles and was 13 years old when I got rid of it a few years ago, and that had never broken down. But the Mazda I just sold was generally reckoned to be good for at least 200k miles, and probably 300k if looked after well. How do scoobs compare with that?

very closely related is the question "how hard do you drive it?"

I had a 170 bhp toyota that I redlined a few times a day for over 3 years with no problems. I drove it pretty hard all the time and I expected it to stand for it and it did.

I didn't expect to drive my scooby that hard all the time but I find that I cannot help it, it's too much fun. I let it warm up and cool down every day. I am going to be in trouble in the near future???.

BTW, it's 10 years old! I saved money on the purchase price to pay for th emods and fuel I knew I wa going to be using. And it's currently got 50k miles on it, put on in Japan.

do you drive it that hard all the time

99uk
90k service just done at Subaru4You.co.uk belts n all,(thanks Len) less than £500!!
in the past I have had brake discs and pads (front), another set of front pads, one set of rear pads, the rest has just been the servicing schedule.
the only failure I have had was that the inner nearside front driveshaft seal (WTF??) went on me and the car reaked of burning oil each time I stopped, cost £100 to strip and clean and refit new etc from Proven in haslemere.
dont worry Pete, at your age your car will outlive you

I've had rear wheel bearings go twice in 20k miles. First clutch lasted 7.5k miles. First engine blew up spectacularly at 17.5k miles. First set of pads on the Alcons were gone within 1200 miles. That was on a standard car driven sympathetically Sell now, before it's too late!

I suspect you don;t see many high mileage ones as the enthusiasts don't do a high mileage.

The high mileage drivers get rid of them early because of the fear of a large bill. As they are high milers they are cheap, hence they get bought by someone of doubtful driving ability, and get crashed!

Mind you it appears a significant number can't even get past the warranty stage without a large failure!

I had a catastrophic alarm bracket failure, which meant the alarm module hung limply in the engine bay Oh and a new alarm module because the cell transmitters interfered with the key fob.

Yes, agree with Chuckie, get rid now before it implodes.

Well ive got a 98 UK turbo with 54,000 miles on and drive it hard on occasions but make sure its warmed up and cools down properly.

Took it in for a service and the mechanic said it didnt even need it, he said the spark plugs were like new and everything else was fine, apart from tires getting slightly low on grip

So unless my cars like herby the beatle and cleans itself if you look after your car it should last you fine.

MY00 Turbo @ 113k here

Full service history so all of the appropriate "bits" have been replaced at the correct times - *nothing* else has ever needed replacing (bar wear & tear items - dread to think how much has been spent on Eagle F1's!! )

Only other thing I can recall, was that the Clutch was replaced at 40k under warranty in attempt to relieve the infamous "judder".

Very happy customer

I drove a UK my99 turbo and covered 120000 miles in 2 and a half years.
The only non service items that were replaced was a rear wheel bearing. The pads were changed twice and the disks once. It was a fully maintained company car and believe me it had a tough paper round

Christ on a bike - its 4 small bolts that join the prop to the diff !!! OK so its 8 bolts if they refit it too!! (should also undo the prop bearing support bolts too but thats only another two and hey off comes your prop!

Oh by the way I'm at 83K in my P1 and only ever had a rear diff (under warranty) and the usual service stuff

Cheers

That's how good the turbos can be!

Just hit 150k (miles not £££££'s), box has just been changed as it was getting a bit rumbly, otherwise only non servicable items have been rear wheel bearings at 100k. Cheap as old chips - although I did spend £4k on fuel last year.

Not many imports mentioned so far - so I thought I would pipe up.

Mines a 97 Sti 3 wagon @ 92,000 miles.

Its on its third set of tyres and brake disks, the clutch was done at 40k and its had a well full of Motul 15/50 in its time.

Only thing that ever failed was a coolant hose split. I'm very impressed with the reliability and how strong it still feels. Roll on the next 45k miles, as the cambelt has just been replaced.
