Thinking of buying a SECS...worth it?

Thinking of buying a SECS...worth it?
I'm getting fed up as the CEL keeps coming on due to the decat on MY01 WRX.
Always turns out to be O2 sensor (despite having a CEL fix fitted with the exhaust) but worry that it's something else until I can get it checked.
I always thought the SECS looked a bit naff but the new VHD version looks
I'll need a single DIN as my defis are in the pod on the dash so a new stereo purchase will add to the cost
The single din only appears to be available in the S1001 model, anyone know the diferrence between this and the S1003 and S1004.
Not sure what to do as £460 odd plus a stereo is a lot of cash just to check error codes (I know it does tons more stuff but as I've got Defi's and a knocklink on the way probably wouldn't make much use of the other features).
Any advice or suggestions will be much appreciated.
Cheers

Doesn't the S1001 S1003 and S1004 refer to how there mounted ,e.g. pod mount.
I think the S1003's the one for classics and the S1004 is for pod mount.
I find the SECS unit to be very informative and worth the money ,also useful if I get an CEL up.
My mate who's a mechanic thinks the SECS is a fantastic piece of kit ,and he thinks its worth it wait in gold just for the diagnostic codes it can retrieve.

I've been looking at the SECS - and I have no gauges at all at the moment.
Is the "skyline" type display a real option and if so how long until it is available - or maybe it was a wish rather than a near reality!

With my good looks I have never had to buy SECS.
I've got the VFD S1004 which I fitted myself.Great bit of kit.Well happy with it.

mate I used to gets loads of cels on my bugeye and the secs was really good just to check out what the code is
I was told not to reset the ecu for each cel as I was loesing all my learned maps which makes sence to me. Now I just check the fault and restart the car 4 or 5 times till it goes

Not ditching my defi's, they are far too and one of my favourite mods.
So basically, there's no difference between the different models of Secs unit, the codes only relate to fitting i.e. classic with pod, classic single din, new age with pod, etc.
Anyone got a link to the new version that's apparently coming out in 2 months as I'd rather wait and have the newest version.
Thanks for the replies so far.

I was recently looking at a Blitz Nur Spec but decided against it as too expensive for minimal gains

I've got a SECS on my MY02 bugeye and it's worthless versus a "real" mapper sorting out the car so I can sleep at night!!
Bob Rawle sorted out all the spurious CEL's via an EcuTek re-map....sorted !!
one eye on the boost guage, the other on the Knocklink
Midlife.....
Edited to ask for Fulham's help with bonnet pins

Thought about an ECUTEK remap but as I've already got a PPP ecu didn't think it was worth it. My understanding was that the early 01/02 PPP were similar to a boost clamp and couldn't be remaped i.e. I'd have to flog the PPP ecu and get a standard one and have that remaped?
Decisions, decisions...... having my STI intercooler and Knocklink fitted soon so would ideally like to get this sorted at the same time.
Cheers

What a difficult decision.. I see you have gone for the Sti intercooler (like me), please make sure you have the Y piece as well that goes underneath as I forgot and got one from short notice from Subaru UK and cost £80 odd quid.
With the de-cat and the Sti intercooler (presumably an Sti panel filter) thats a lot of air going thru'. The Sti Intercooler is really quite efficient AFAIK in ters of charge temp drop and pressure drop..the WR1 pokes out 320 PS and I get 325 BHP out of mine.
The great thing about MAF systems is the flexibility with mods but not sure if the PPP could cope ??
If you were sticking with a Subaru ECU it might be better to start from scratch, flog the Prodrive ECU and get a standard ECU mapped to suit the mods that you have. Then forget the SECS and rely on traditional gauges ??
Tricky choice Chris
Shaun
PS the problem with Scoobynet is that most posts relate to what has gone right. I bought a set of 18" BK racing 121's on e-bay, had them refurbed in prodrive gold witha hint of pearl for those sunny days and......................they didn't fit over my gospeed brakes. £500 quid in all Ouch !!

I would be interested in comparing the information I see on the SECS in my 03STi with other users. I see some crazy ignition advance on occasions and also there is no knock correction readout on the menu?

Hi Shaun,
thanks for replying.
To date the PPP ecu seems to have coped quite well. It's going to be difficult to find someone willing to pay for the PPP ecu when most 01/02 cars will soon be out of warranty and the ECUTEK is the better route to go.
Would love to have the ECUTEK done but don't want to shell out £650 plus VAT when the PPP seems to be working well.
I think the STI cooler has everything I need (seller said that it came with the bigger pipe which I assume is the section you are referring to).
Got an STI filter in the Group Buy also
Having looked around it looks like one of the retailers advertising on here do the VFD SECS for £400.00 all in which is quite tempting
Can't make my mind up
Cheers

boys (Midlife and Chris), hope you don't mind my butting in --> but I have an STI intercooler fitted to my MY02 WRX as well, and was wondering if you knew where I (or we) could source the proper under-bonnet scoop fitment for the larger intake?? Mine currently has the STI7 scoop and STI8 intercooler, but the standard 02 WRX under-scoop, which cuts out some of the extra airflow.....
cheers

hadn't thought about that, I've still got the standard WRX scoop and under bonnet scoop.
Hopefully Midlife can shed some light on the subject
