Default BP or Shell......

Any views on BP Ultimate fuel and whether it is as good / better than Optimax?

I'd suggest you do a search on this - it's been covered many many tmes in the past. The general feeling is that as Optimax has a higher RON than Ultimate then it's likely to give better performance - but there will be some exceptions!!!

From Knocklink activity alone, Shell on my car is better; though I live next to a BP & regularly fill up with Ultimate.........

there is more to fuel than just ron rating. mon rating is one of them in which case ultimate is higher than that optimax.

personally I go by what the detcans do and they and the knocklink do tend to prefer optimax.

Fill up with BP Ultimate, but feel that Optimax does give the car more spirit.

Problem being nearest Shell is a good few miles away... Infact any other garage is a good few miles away!

Just out of curiosity, do you guys do nothing but drive around wearing headphones and looking at wee flashing leds? - The manual doesn't say you have to do this

**** me, I fill up with either SUL or Ultimate and just drive the car.....Is that not what they were designed to do? Maybe you guys have heavily modded you cars or something?

Mine is an MY02 UK Sti Prodrive - with PPP

shaun,

mine didn't come with a manual, and unless subaru sell a 500bhp 22b, then checking it with det cans is fine so long as it stays in one piece.

The det cans reference was to when it was mapped on the dyno, not necessarily on the road. when the engine is in the car and the map is tweaked to suit it will be with det cans, but only during the mapping stage.

My nearest Optimax is 75 miles away, but I manage to time it well to get a fill when on business..... (MY04 UK STI)

...Locally, it's a choice between Esso SUL or BP Ultimate.....

Anyone know how Esso SUL and BP Ultimate stack up??

Interesting how they are both 97RON, whereas Optimax is claimed 98.4 minimum......

"The best available [ November 2003] is Shell Optimax at about 98.5 octane. Next up is Esso Super and Total/Fina Super both 98. The newly introduced BP ultimate is 97, however BP claim that as the fuel is cleaner etc. it burns more like 100 and thus is OK."

The above is from API's website.

I always thought that Esso Super seemed to make my car "go" better, but never thought anything more about it. But this sort of explains it!

Oh and Adam, 500Bhp 22b - good man, hope it holds together for you. I was only winding up about the manual thing.
