Most expensive dealer service?
I've just had the 60,000 mile cambelt service on my 2000 Impreza Turbo, the basic service with no problems found was £630. Am I alone in thinking this is an outrageous price to pay for a service.
I did get a lovely leaflet with the bill though telling me that Subaru has slashed the price of spare parts (including cambelts). When I checked the bill I noticed that the cambelt was £83? I'd hate to think what it cost before the prices were slashed!

You get
1:Oil
2:Filter
3:Coolant
4:Fuel filter
5:Air filter
6:Plugs *4 fitted
7:Gearbox Oil
And fitting...
I recon with a ramp i could do that myself in 1 hour!
Sum Total...£400 WTF is all that about!
To put this into perspective That's almost £200 more expensive than a well known specialst quoted me... Now I don't mind paying a bit more for a dealer service but thats taking the Pi$$...
Just to get this right for thise who didn't see a previous post i did...
If you buy a new car or bought one after April, then you can have it legaly serviced at a specialst such as scooby clinic/TSL and the like... and keep your warranty.
If before that date then Subaru have you by the B-lox... and you must have it dealer serviced! This to me is complete ****e!, What I'm effectivly doing is paying for the warranty that should come with the car! through the inflated prices...!
The moral of this story is... Unless you have a car that is still in its 3 year warranty... bought before April.. GO TO A SPECIALST and save your money...
The fact it has a Subaru stamp in the book from now on, will not have any effect on the warranty nor have any effect on resale value... so don't waste your money...
In the meantime... some of us will be paying through the nose to a car maker that instead of making the OFT ruling retospective, would like to screw its customers for every last penny whilst it can!
All i can say is the dealers will be having bloody big shock in three years time when they have no customers cars to service!

I spoke to IM about this earlier this year (re-newed the Mrs MY96 Wagon Sport for an MY04 Wagon GXSport in February) and was told then that the warranty will be OK if serviced by a specialist so long as they use OE parts. This was only a telephone conversation so no proof in writing, though.
Where did you get the dealine from stating it to be April? Interested coz my Turbo (MY99) goes religiously to Scoobyclinic, but no warranty issues there, and would prefer the GXSport to go too.

Unless the manufacturer states that they will ignore what is says in the Book!
And as far as I'm aware and from a few people who have phoned IM, they are not making it retrospective!

thanks fro that Dazza
I think I'll write to IM and get a decision in writing, especially if they tell me a car registered in Feb 04 is covered by the block exemption. I can just see in a couple of years time should a claim under warranty arise, them trotting out the May 2004 rule.
Will post an update if/when I get a response.
Cheers.

Result!
OK just been on the phone to IM spoke to Adrian after being on hold for 20 mins, and this is the result...
Contrary to my thinking and to what people had been saying, IM have stated they will honour the Warranty if the vehicle was serviced at a REPUTABLE outfit... This means they will abide by the OFT block exemtion ruling and also do this retrospectivly on vehicles still under warranty purchased before the 1 May 2004...
However this was the stipulation... the parts MUST be Subaru OEM or of equal\Higher standard than Subaru and to be proven they are of such quality... I asked for an example... and this was the reply.
"if you had it serviced and two months later the engine had a catastrophic failure... under inspection they found the oil filter was spurious/ inferior... then we would have reason not to honour the warranty... it would then be down to the customer to PROVE the part was of the same quality as the OEM part... and the responcibilty would be on the customer fully...!"
To this end I would do as it states in the OFT information document, and check ALL parts fitted... Keep ALL receipts and even packing, and document everything that is done by the service outfit...SIMPLE
And for the first time in years, me and you the punters can finaly get a fair service price, and not have to remove our trousers and bend over every time we enter the dealers!
i think that is a result then!

I don't care what anyone says I wouldn't touch a Scooby without full Subaru history.
Try proving that the previous owner used good oil a year down the line for example.

Thats what everyone will be doing as you are now entitled to do so... Becouse the reason why the OFT stepped with regards to servicing is that...
1: the dealer service was no better than a reputable service agent
2 dealers were proven to be taking advantage of a captured audiiance
3 dealers charging extortionate rates for what amounted to general serivce items and labour...
This is all documented on the OFT's website... very interesting reading...
The result the mptor industry shot itself in the foot...
Good news for the customer...

Thanks for all the posts, although my car is now out of warranty (because they wanted £850 for an extra 2 years) I'm still concerned about selling the car on without dealer history, like most other people judging from the replys. I'm in the Colchester area, is there a "Subaru specialist" person round here that anyone can recommend?

Personally would prefer to take car to a specialist such as TSL - Better service than my local dealer. I always wait while the car is done and can watch the mechanics working on the car. Also happier with the Silkolene lubricants used by TSL, than whatever the dealer says has been used on the service invoice. In addition knowledge of TSL staff seems far superior to my experiences at local dealer whereby parts/answers have not been as forthcoming in the 2 years I used the dealer.
Local dealer is not that local, and although TSL is further away, its actually easier than having a courtesy car for the day where the milegae for myself back and forth would be the same as travelling to TSL and waiting (TV/Playstation and good local pub/food near/at TSL helps too!!, as well as countless cups of coffee while you wait).
Just my opinion and experiences, and while there was not particularly any problems as such using the dealer, the likes of TSL seem to go the "extra mile" for good service

Its Your responsibilty is to ensure it is a reputable outlet and keep a copy of the details and parts used...
This has been going on in the states i beleive for soem time, and they don't have any problems!
Also just to say, i beleive most people on would agree the few Subaru specialst around are very well respected... Probably more so than dealers!
And personaly I would prefere to have a car that has been serviced by such an outfit... Also, I've heard so many bad dealer posts, one where technitions are thrapping the **** off customers cars and such... I would find it very hard to believe this would happen at one if the specialsts, mainly becouse of a few things...
1 They DO Not have you as a captured audiance, and so respect your custom
2 In the light of them now being able to make an impression and do such services... they are ,much more likley to do a better job...!
3 In most cases will use supirior parts such as oil than the dealer! also would allow you to use higher quality parts if you desire.
4 Would like you to come back and tell your palls, than a dealer who has always just sat and espected you to come back becouse you had no choice!
All i can say is good luck to the the Subaru Specialsts, and look forward to a fair and open market, like it should be; With resonable service costs that relfect what they are actualy doing!
On the radio a few weeks ago was a discusion on car serviceing, and it stated that in some cases the hourly rate for a mechanic to service your car was 1 half time that of a Senior Hospital consultant... I think it was on radio 2...
30k service £400+
I'll guess the parts and oil at £150 Tops, and the dealer cost will be around half of that!
So i think i could do the lot in 1 hour and check the car... given a ramp and a spanner!
£250 per hour is taking the Pi$$ id say... obviously IMO
Surely Plugs and fluids is not than an intensive job, or maybe I'm completly wrong!

Its not defined it just says, a VAT registered garage!
Like i said, ints in your own interest to have it done correctly... and this is what manufactures are looking for in the case of a warranty issue...
The responciblity is on you to ensure you keep all the records...

Why not do the job yourself? It's not too hard, I done one recently on a scoob.
I certainly wouldnt be paying a dealer a small fortune on the off-chance that the monkey in a subaru boilersuit knows what he's doing.
what about that then, missus?

while i fully agree with getting a specialist to do your servicing over an overpriced dealer (like i do ) i do believe that a Full Subura service history will at least make my car more appealing when it comes to selling.
now personally i put specialists at worst, on par with my dealer, with most a prefered choice, as would most people on here. but general joe public might not and this might well make a difference when selling.
it's bloody hard enough selling a scoob without having to explain to someone who doesn't know different, that the guy on your service book is in fact BETTER than your dealer.
just my 2p's worth

In fact you have the chance to be better informed as to who looked after it! as the people who look after thier cars will have all the relevant documents and it will be obvious its been well cared for...
When my car goes it will have every reciept in a folder, with the type of oils used and everything that goes with it.
