Default buying concern

ive been looking at various scoobies for sale in the trader and about 40% of them say full engine rebuild at a very low mileage. are imprezas prone to premature engine failure? i dont want to buy one and then have the engine blow shortly afterwards
cheers ...lee

Remember, with their pedigree, they tend to be bought by people who want to and do thrash them more than some other makes.

They are sensitive knocking, imports need modification to run on UK fuel or engine failure will result

I hope someone has a good answer to thisquestion, normally people seem to come out with:

It wasnt looked after propperly,

It wasnt serviced correctly,

It was run on the wrong fue,

It wasnt mapped correctly,

Too many modifications,

MAF sensor failed,

It was 'Bodged',

You only hear of the ones going wrong, not the ones that keep running, without problems.

Im sure someone will be along soon to put your mind at rest, and reassure you that these cars are super reliable and there car has done 200,000 miles on the same engine with 350 bhp.

I have a MY96 UK turbo. I've serviced it myself for the past 3 years, it's reasonably modified - between 260 and 280 bhp. It's done 90k miles so far and no rebuild. It's always warmed up properly and allowed to cool. In between it gets thrashed senseless.

If you take precautions - ideally a minimum of boost gauge and knock link (a detonation monitor) then there's no reason why it shouldn't last. I know someone with a modified MY96 UK wagon with 150k+ miles on it.

It's the second best car I've had. I'm afraid the TVR Griffith is just a little more fun...

The engine is pretty strong - its normally the crap air sensor that's the problem. You're better waiting for one from here, owned by one of the more respectable members who know there stuff. Possibly less chance of buying one where the owner doesn't know much about the car. This is much more of a problem with 99/00 cars. Dont touch one thats had an induction kit on it

Not heard of many bug eyes letting go at all, and not *that* many UK99/00 go pop to be fair. STi's go bang for a past time
