Main dealer discount on a new STi?
I spoke to my main dealer about ordering a 2005 STi, he said that their margin is now just 5% and there's no room for discounts. Is he fobbing me off or is this right?

Yes. Of course he is (fobbing you off). Try 10 others and see what the outcome is. (Just look on the subaru website for dealer contact details within 40 odd mile radius of your postcode). Doesn't always go on margin - sometimes they have volume targets to hit as well. Just depends on how each individual dealership/salesperson is doing at that time.

When I was ringing round before I bought mine I rang one ( berkshire , can't remember the name ) and they had just lost their dealership so I decided to be cheeky and ask the sales manager a few questions , he didn't mind as he had nothing to lose and wasn't trying to sell me a car

In have read clearly that Subaru UK have reduced the dealers margin on the new STI to keep it at the same or similar on the road price so 5% on a 2005 model may be accurate now.
Old stock however should be better discounted especially at the moment and over the next coming months,

With the new MY05 STI out in mid-October, how much should I haggle to get off a MY04 STI. I would wait until the 05 but my current WRX needs MOT, insurance and tax before the end of September.

you can almost feel sorry for the dealers when I.M. give them a price so much higher than anywhere else in the world - £16k + vat for STi in Europe and less in Japan and USA - makes you wonder why ANY customer buys UK....

This place get boring with anti IM bashing. Renault charges £20k for a 2wd Megane, the Focus was 20k, the new GTI over 20k. And ask a VW dealer how great their margins are - typically no better than an IM one.

Bit of searching on the internet and I could get (now) almost £1,800 off an STi (current 04 model) without even trying - an official UK car from an official UK dealer. Sometimes, you just have to look.... and given they have the run out models in stock, I'm sure you could get one within a week...
