cambelt
need to change my cambelt for my 96 classic turbo. is it worth getting one changed at a dealer for 'peace of mind' (although get stung for labour + vat costs) ? or try a garage that deals with cambelt changes (might be cheaper...)? other all, a cambelt is the same as any other, right?
advice appreciated

Depends where. If you live near to Reading Berkshire 'Subaru4You' are recommended and have ex Subaru trained staff. Bulldog Twyford (main dealer) may also prove to be competetive.

Cambelt Change
Hi Ben,
I just had this issue with my classic. My local Subaru dealer quoted me £600 for major service and cambelt.
Anyway to cut a long story short, I went to my local Suzuki dealer who used to be a Subaru dealer and the whole thing cost me £300 including belt and plugs!!
Also checked my history and it was actually the same guy who signed the service book when it was a Subaru dealer to who it is now. Anyway point is try local specialists as they are always cheaper than main dealer.
cheers

Subaru chage VERY excessively for the cambelt service. Especially when compared to most cars on the road it is an absolute doddle, and takes less than quarter the time to do than that of a Ford Mondeo! Yet it costs more to do on a scooby (try and work that out )
Best find a specialist IMO. Belt at dealers cost £100 geniune OE spec Gates belt (the company that makes 80% of manufactures cambelt across the globe) is £50.
That's £50 saved already. Then add the rather pricey labour on top of that!

Then add up the cost if the non OE belt fails ... isn't the STi belt a Kevlar weave and so far better and Still only about £90 from dealers ... I prefer the peace of mind, use a good after market garage and the genuine STi belt.

Most original manufacturers belts even have "Gates" stamped on them!
They offer the exact guarantee against failure as the car manufacturer...you know why? Because It's the same belt!
That's why it is an OE spec belt
