Post Newbie needs advice

Hello people, I wonder if you could give us a bit of advice....

I am thinking of purchasing a Subaru Impreza WRX on an M-plate with 58k on the clock.... But the thing that worries me is because I live within 2 miles of work the car will be doing alot of short trips and I've heard that the fuel consumption with the Boxer engine is a horrific.... Is this true ?? In pounds and pence how many miles are you looking at if driven sensibly from £20 Super unleaded ??

Thanks in advance

LEE

£40 gets me about 250 miles in my 97 Turbo. Thats at 87.9p per litre Optimax.

Thats with a 50 mile round trip down the M1. The rest is relativley short trips

Stop start driving I'd guess at about 100-125 miles from £20 on a scoob but if you get one you'll probably find yourself going for drives for the hell of it

See thats the thing, Ill want to be driving it all the time and it will end up costing me a fortune !!

Also what is the servicing schedule ? Is it oil change every 3,000 to keep the turbo happy and a full service every 6,000 ?

Service is every 7,500 miles or 6 months. But my next one is only a minor one...after that is the 60k one.

I do have a massive temptation to use the car more than Intended. I was off work ill last week but after driving the scooby somewhere, stil found a big smile on face

Here's some stats from my MY04 WRX Wagon....

Every other week I drive to the local station and get the train. The other week I drive up to London.

STATION....

10 miles a day return trip from home to the station Monday to Friday
50 miles weekend pottering about
---
100 miles, approx cost for the week £15

LONDON....

100 miles a day return trip Monday to Friday (West Sussex to Putney)
50 miles weekend pottering about
---
550 miles, approx cost for the week £75

I do give the Scoob some 'beans' on the A24 Monday to Friday so the cost could be bettered!

If you're entering into Impreza Turbo ownership.... high fuel costs are part of the package. This is all down to the fact you'll love to drive the car, and drive it again, and drive it more, and just once more, and so on

J.

Think I can speak with experience here. I have a MY93 WRX and I live about 2 miles from work also. I always use Optimax with no booster. There are no engine mods and I get 18 mpg in town at 3000 rpm or less all the time, never more than 40 mph (everyone does 40 in a 30 here unless in busy streets). Costs an average of £60-70 a month in fuel.

Had the car for 16 months and have had no problems with all the cold starts, though it never really gets heated up properly during the week. Thats why I need to keep it under 3000 rpm .

I service every 6 months, which is just under 3,000 miles and the last 2 services cost me £140 each, with no faults. Just sailed through its MOT and has now done 49k miles.

It does help if you get a really good car to start with though.

Get a bike of the pedal nature
2 miles each way wont even warm your car up, you will just clog the engine doing that
This gives you the opportunity of getting fitter and having the car for the weekend
