Look at the downsides first....
Costs of moving the car from the dealer to the port, cost for tax at the port (10%), cost of shipping insurance, cost of shipping, 17.5% vat, exchange rate etc.....
I doubt you will save THAT much, and it probably will pay you to go to someone like www.litimports.co.uk who also give you a warranty, alarm, tracking system, it may cost a few k more but saves you all the stress

Tony

PS, upsides? you get a new car

21k, they are about 3200000 yen, works out about 19ish k, then add 10% tax before it leaves japan, clobber it with the 17.5% tax in the uk and its gone up quite a lot
Plus shipping (6-800 quid) plus insurance (500 quid)..... then add registration and road tax (300 quid+) an alarm/tracking system, another 1k.... total cost (starting from 19k) works out about 25k in total, probably more than you expected

now used, thats another matter. Pick up a nice 3 year old that's been part exed before the shaken hits. You are still being hit for the tax etc, but the original price would be way lower.

3200000 yen is about £16842 even @ £1 = 190 yen, so try this:-

car £16842 (fob) that means on the boat(no inland delivery) shipping with insurance £1500 = £18342,
when it lands here you pay 10% import duty £1834.20 =20176.20 then don't forget the VAT 17.5% £3530.83

total £23707.03

excange reates can make a huge difference a few months ago the rate was £1 = 215 yen do those sums = huge savings

Oooops, forgot something
Add 300 for registration, 500 for ESVA (may be more), alarm and tracking system at 1k, so 25.5k.....
All i will say is that its much easier just going to a dealer and buying the car, considering its going to be covered in a protective wax which is a pain in the *** to get off, and the fact you have to run around for months trying to sort everything out as you have no contacts over in japan, it will make your life a living hell so you wont appreciate the car
27k gets you a fully specc'd JDM 2005 car with no hassles, you save 1.5k, you dont have to worry about anything, you wont get totally stressed.....

As I havent ever imported a new car from Japan, I cant be sure about taxes charged; if it were a used car there certainly isnt a 10% exit tax to pay. A used vehicle would attract a sales tax of 5% at auction which can be reclaimed on export but not all agents will tell you this. Internal transfers will probably cost a maximim of £200 but actually arranging them will be very difficult in a country where hardly anyone speaks English. If the vehicle can be supplied un-registered it may not require state inspection; if they require inspection like a used car then you will have to arrange that and arrange payment for it too..... Shipping will cost approximately US$70 per cubic metre, which will be about $735, currently £406 with marine insurance adding about £10 (NEVER omit this). When it lands you will have to deal with the shippers agents/customs clearers who will eventually fleece you for about £200. Import duty will be payable on the cost of the car and ALL expences associated with getting it here (£16,525 + £300 + £416 = £17,241 + 10% Import Duty = £18,965 + 17.5%VAT = £21,967 I make it. All you need to do now is register the f*cker; there is a model report I assume?

A used vehicle will be even more difficult.....

The car will need to be registered to take it out of the country
Shipping will ok, say cost 500, but then you have to look at the insurance, it use to be a good 200 quid, but we will go with 500, on top of the car at 190 yen per quid, plus 10% export tax, plus 17.5% tax in the uk = 21768. Im not even going into any hidden costs like moving the car from the dealer to the port which could cost you a fair few quid, say 300, call it 22k so far, ESVA will set you back 500+, maybe more, so 22.5k, 300 quid for registration, still 1k for alarm/tracker, 500 quid for any other unknowns, thats still 24.5k.
Now there are also some downsides to this, you have to get the ESVA AND registration done in 14 days of the car landing here or else you may find that your car is registered as an older vehicle
There are so many hidden costs that it is just a waste of time
It is just alot easier just to pick a car up from a dealer, it will save you the hassle and stress of not knowing what/where your car is.

The figures that I have used are absolutely accurate; it costs no more to move a new car than it does a used car; YA charge £10 for marine insurance. The last imported car that I registered cost £25 plus excise licence which can be six months worth only.

I wouldnt entertain importing a new car; and I know how to do it. If you really want a new JDM Id suggest speaking to a specialist with a good reputation.

(In my previous post, when I said that a used car will be even harder; I meant to do on your own; from England)

Everythings f*cked though isnt it? I used to be able to make £3,000 on each Evo or Scooby but not any more. For your investment the greatest return is made on older cars now, that cost < £1,000 at auction; then you find yourself competing against the sh*te bought from docks auctions and sold by ignorant traders who describe themselves as 'importers'. The import market is pretty well shagged.

Simon (if they cant show you the Japanese auction sheet tell them to **** off)

There is NO way of getting the Import Duty and VAT back that is paid at POI; no way at all, no matter what you do.

Someone I knew imported a brand new Lexus RX300 about 5 years ago or so. When it turned up, there was an oily/dirty handprint on the door (inside) on the cream cloth.

Remember when importing a car from Japan, is it true it will have done a super special stage max revs and lots of transmission stress to run the car in at the docks by one of the lads working there!
