Default Just got PPP - Exhaust now popping/banging???...

I've noticed that when I'm at high revs and do a quick change, I get a real loud pop/bang from the left hand side of the car.

Say changing from 3rd to 4th at 6k and getting back on the gas in a digital stylie.

I think it also may have done it as I changed from 2nd to 1st and was giving a little after going over a speed hump at 5mph.

Is this normal??????

Before i de-catted my car, i used to get the odd quiet pop now and again so i wouldn't worry about it (mines not a UK though).

But now without the cat, it sounds like a gun going off

mines got ppp and bangs too its the excess fuel getting blown out
next time your going bombing down the road in the dark, try and make it pop and watch the road light up behind you, nothing like it especially if your overtaking someone

Oh yeah, does it have a vent to atmosphere D/V. Coz that's what causes it. AFAIK.

I get loads of pops and bangs now I've decatted, wasn't aware that I'd have flame out of the back?

I find the hotter the exhaust the better the pops & bangs. You just need a tunnel to get the full effect. I'm sure Optimax helps....or am I just kidding myself?

I'd say it depends what you mean - pops on the overrun are normal i believe but if its like my ppp i had fitted a couple of weeks ago, if you change the torque suddenly i'e lift of for the numpty who just pulled out just as the car is on song or the like and you get a bang then there MAY be something wrong - well at least thats what i (and dealer who did it) recons.

Mine sounds like the exhaust is hitting something in those occations and is booked in on saturday to have it looked at.

My uncle who is a car dealer (NOT scooby) says that sometimes the exhaust looks seated bang on straight but a little bit off and .......

Will post result on saturday

I`ve got a standard STI 03, only with a Afterburner Vortex on the back. That pops and bangs at high revs when changing gear. Also when changing back down too, but there`s a bit of a knack to that

I'll have to do some more testing today. Mine also sounds like it's hitting something, but I think it only happens if I'm back on the gas immediately.

mine pops, but that was because of the dump valve making it run too rich. Now the dumpvalve is off and the fueling is back to normal, no pops or bangs but the car is a lot lot quicker thanks to the better fuelling

Have a look to see if the top of the backbox at the rear, is hitting the heatshield (exhausts grow when warm!) I've just had 20mm cut out of my exhaust system to prevent this on a MY01 with PPP.

I suggest trying to move the tailpipe to see if you can recreate the knock. Another clue is to see if the exhaust hangers are vertical on the backbox. Mine were back at about 60 degrees!

Regards,

Ian

When I decatted my car before the remap it was popping and banging (and slightly knocking). Once Bob Rawle looked at the map it started out very rich which he resolved during the mapping process and hence the bangs have gone and the knock too .

From memory even just running a replacement backbox it was popping on lift off, so mine might of been running over rich out of the box.

I certainly wouldnt recomend to anyone to decat a car without getting it checked over and re-mapped if needed, and allthough the pops and bangs sound good running that rich is not a great idea. not that a UK dealer will take you seriously if you complained your PPP map is to rich.

as said its running too rich, its unburnt fuel hitting the hot exhaust manifold that you hear when you get the pops sounds awsome but in the long run you are damaging the engine....
