whats the best you have got so far. is it possible to get into the 30`s ?? the tank on the new 05 model is bigger isnt it. just weighing up some final costs.

My 04 WRX would do 33 - 34 mpg on a steady 80 ish motorway cruise, general driving mixture town / a roads / motorway about 30 mpg. Hard driving 25 - 27 mpg.

People moan about the economy of them, but TBH for permanent 4WD and the performance on offer they are pretty good.

30 may be possible on m'way cruising but I get 22mpg around town. Best I've had ~26mpg steady m'way!

not sure about tank being bigger? My 05 wrx hopds 60 ltr.

60 litres is the same size the tank's been for the last few years on UK cars.

Blimey! I surely have a problem with my right foot, these figures are what I got from my 03 Mini Cooper .
I've just taken delivery of my 04 WRX (no mods) and I'm still running in on my first tank but as far as I can see I'm aiming for 20 mpg (driving mixture town/country roads).

Which fuel are you using?

Best I did was on a 350 mile run home from Devon. Tried to hold a steady 70, just under boost at 2800 revs and managed 32.75mpg. Average is normally about 25, dropping below 20 in the twisties.

I averaged roughly 25mpg over my 18,500 miles of ownership for a '03 WRX PPP - was pretty pleased with that.

Usually Sainburys SUL or normal UL, tried optimax could not notice any difference.

Funnily enough I had a MCS before mine and that never did more than 26 - 28 even on a run. The WRX is more economical !

I would expect you to better 20 mpg no matter how hard you drive.

Could it be the cars under performing on ul95 and therefore would be more economical..? Or there's a lump of wood under your loud pedal that you don't know about..!

never got more than about 23 as far as I can remember, and 19 is pretty much the norm from tank to tank (sad I know but I check it every time)

Bloomin heck mate, you'd make a good saleman for Subaru!. I've never seen those figures from a tank. I mostly commute stop/start and recieve 22-24's... and that included the occational heavy boot. Maybe a true test would be to do a solid 300 miles journet and see how it goes.

I suppose at least you've proven 30 is achievable from a WRX.

I used to use Sainsbury's SUL and thought I couldn't tell a difference but once I booted it I noticed the acceleration was slightly hesitant. Switched back to Optimax and noticed a deifinite improvement.

i know of the power but its only 225bhp. a megane rs 225bhp gets around 35mpg not bad really. i think jap cars not just subarus but all jap cars drink more.

Well I've just swapped my clio 172 (35mpg on u/l at worst) for a WR1 (22mpg on su/l at best) and it is certainly stinging!

Ok so the megane will probably do 30 in the real world - but have you looked at it? have you ever seen one on the road - I know I haven't - what does that tell you? The megane is sh!te by all accounts and it aint lugging around 4wd is it? And its traction control is supposed to be your worst nightmare - and can't be switched off above ~20mph! no fun there then.

hey im new so let me off when i say thats complete bollox.

the Megane RS has more features simular internal build lower insurance group higher economy unquie (everyone has scoobs soon i will too ((hmmm ibiza cupra PD160)). its exaclty the same speed as a standard wrx. 0-60 means very little but for the record its been tested at 6secs and the wrx is 5.8 wow 0.2 diffo i couldnt even start/stop with a stopwatch such a little difference.

you can tune the megane to 300hp easliy (mitsi twin scroll turbos on it).

ok its just the looks you either love it or hate it...hmmm sound like a car thats mentioned on this forum. still far less of those on the roads which is cool.

anyways, im not arguing cos i cant be arsed. but the mpg probably 4wd related is poor by most peoples standards. the megane rs has got a lot of flak but it will be a corking second hand buy. keyless entry and keyless start are some of the great features it has. its all about balance.

btw yes i know its not **** hot around corners but it still goes round them fast (i know ive been in one a few times now)

No offence, but if that's one of it's best selling points . . . . Never really seen the problem with using remote locking and ignition keys myself.

OK the megane will go to 300bhp, but with front drive can it really use that power? I may be wrong, but I somehow doubt it

However, I agree that the fuel consumption on both scoobs and evos, comparing with even other 4wd turbos (say previous Audi S3) is not particularly impressive. But that's not why we buy them. Light weight, low drag and losses etc is the way to achieve economy and performance. Best I've encountered for that is my Dad's GTM Libra. Tuned 1.8 K series, perhaps 150bhp, slightly lighter than an Elise. Equivalent straight line (and out-handles in the dry) a standard UK STi, and has on many occassions returned 50mpg on a run.

And to answer the original question, MY02 at >280bhp, 25.5 average over nearly 40k miles (optimax/SUL). Normally ~29 on a run. With the extra poke, it does use a lot more when you boot it.

This 34mpg at steady 80 - I assume this is 80kph?

P.S. "all jap cars drink more" isn't true. The old Toyota Carina - E was easily the most economical 2 litre petrol rep-mobile I ever drove, and I had nearly all of them on hire for work at some stage. Great Economy (high 40s even driven like a hire car) - shame about everything else to do with the car. Numerous other examples of economical jap cars, just scoobs and evos aren't one!

So what are you saying is bollox? So the megane is specced up to buggery? so what ? it doesnt stop it being ****e. Are you buying a limo or a fast car? 0-60 times on a straight dry piece of tarmac aren't everything. And when you start getting on the throttle out of a corner and the traction control has other ideas - what are you going to think then? There are less on the roads cus they're ****e. You can get em new much cheaper than list and still no-one will buy them.

I'm not having a go just because I've got a scoob. In fact I was pretty disappointed when they came out because I was expecting to buy one, after the clio I thought it'd be a cracking car, but sadly not.

I had a MCS before my 05WRX and pootling town driving got me 25mpg (harder town booting and it went down to 23mpg!) - with maybe high 27 or 28 on a run?

Now I've got a WRX I've average 23.5mpg over my 1,000 mile run in period - not too horrendous all things considered.

decided to stick with my 172 for the time being. i get 38mpg on average. 280-300+miles to the tank. dont wanna get a 182 cos there isnt enough difference.

will have to ponder.. on this one before i take the plunge but im also considering an ibiza cupra pd160 (revo to 200hp) and 40+mpg.. just hasnt got 4wd or the refinement of the wrx.

Just remember the MY03 onwards is ~ 10 % more fuel efficient than previous years. You have just said your MY02 has averaged 25.5 and 29 on a run so thats pretty much spot on to me.

The official combined mpg figure for the MY04 WRX is 31 mpg which of course is difficult to acheive on normal mixed driving, but it is the benchmark as to how economical it is compared to other cars. Can someone point me to a permanent 4WD 4 door car with similar performance figures that is better ?

Whats fuel economy? Ive got a road going mk2 escort rally slag that I used to use on a daily basis and that sups more fuel than my Impreza does.

Well I got 400 miles from my 03 WRX, mostly motorways with very little town driving. Think that is v good considering my previous car (Golf TDI 150) done 600 to a full tank!

Well, here is my WRX very first figure: 21 mpg (210 miles with 45 litres)

I Suppose I'm not using the engine very efficiently right now as beeing stuck between 1500 and 4000 rpm (running in) implies lots of gear change (and I just couldn't stop being over 2800 )

I really hope I'll get better figures after 1st 1000 miles service

MY03 no mods. Done 16k miles. Averaged 28mpg. Best is about 33mpg on an easy motorway run.

I think I'm doing about 300 on my tank just now. That's 22 and a bit MPG. That's including a decent bit of welly this morning for 20-30 miles and 70 miles of 90-100mph yesterday.

I really should have driven at 80, but it just feels so incredibly relaxed at that sort of speed. Not like my last car, a vectra, which felt like it was steering on sheet ice.

I managed to get as little as 230 miles on a few occasions out of 60 litres in a 1.8 Vectra.
