Talking Stupid claims

There i was perusing through this months issue of max power, when i cam to the max nation bit with people cars, now i read on and find one sierra cosworth owner claiming to have blown away a posrche turbo (gonna gues he means 911) ummm i thought, then read the rest and its says its tuned to 400bhp+ perhaps not so far feteched than i first thought. so in the interest of fairness i'll give him that one.

next one i spotted honda prelude, umm ok fastest its been 140mph, ok so no to shabby but (big but) my 1.8 astra sri did 135 so i'm not that impressed. (have to say thats poor for a 2.2, anways back to important bits) the next claim, this one made me **** myself (lucky i was readying while enthroned lmao) literally, question best car you've blown away? and his claim, subaru impreza!!!! pmsl was it running on three cylinders or something????? rafpmsl

thats one for the hall of bull**** fame!!!!

Honda Prelude 2.2 VTECs IIRC are 197bhp...... Once moving they are quick cars.

Standard UK Impreza Turbos are 208/215bhp, but they drag around 4WD transmission, so once moving I would expect the Prelude to beat it fairly convincingly!!

Also, doesnt mention whether or not the Subaru is Turbo'd or not. If it was a Sport, the Prelude would probably even beat it off the line!!!!!! lol

Cheers,
Grant

yeah i guessed with the turbo bit. To me blowing away is when you leave a car and accelerate away from it like it was standing still, which cars tat close aint gonna do.

Why couldn't a Prelude beat a Scooby ? It's all down to the driver in the end.

I've blown away a scooby, on foot - ok, the guy had to stop at the pedestrian crossing when the lights turned red enabling me to proceed across the road at a speed amble

What bothers me is that when people find out that you drive a subaru they start to tell you this wonderfull story of how they blew off a subaru in their standard 2.0 calibra or something, but fail to mention that it was a 1.6 that they were actually racing and proceed to tell you that they wouldn't buy a subaru because they're not that impressive.

Tidgy: First of all, you don't read Max Power, you look at the pictures....and I'm not talking about the cars! ;-) Secondly, *reading* it on the loo? . . . Yeah, we believe you! :-D

At the end of the day most of these confrontations are down to who gets on the gas first and who has least regard for their licence; the latter puts Max power boys at a distinct advantage lol ;-)

People claiming that they can "blow away" another car are, more often than not, exaggerating. Real world advantages are often much smaller than differences in figures would suggest, so when you get such claims for cars that have V.similar power outputs, I wouldn't suggest using that page for toilet roll, as it just won't stick! :-)

All the best.

I've owned both hence my user name! (It was a JDM SiR Vtec 202.5bhp)

Prelude is able to get off the line pretty quickly (6.8 - 7.1 secs 0-60) the thing is, if you are caught off guard due to turbo lag a scooby I recon could be had.

Having said that, the Scoob is a quicker car off the mark if you are up for a drag. No question.

Not driven my Scoob against a Prelude yet but I wouldn't go back!

@tidgy - 'blown away' will only be a turn of phrase ...
and btw - I take it your 1.8 was modified to reach 135? (or was that a speedo figure rather than an actual ... you'd need something to the order of 130bhp to do a real 135mph in an Astra!)

there wasn't much difference between my old jdm 2.2 vtec and a mates my99 ppp on a private dual cariageway (from 40mph). the subaru just had the edge.

Ain't the JDM 2.2 vtec more powerful?

Aren't they quoted 125bhp as standard - i.e. "something in the order of 130bhp"? As has been said, it's how quick you get there that counts. Have been in a track prepared Caterham superlight 300 that maxed out at 126mph. I'd lay very large money on that blowing away a 1.8 Astra, a prelude, or a UK turbo on a dry track.

There's preludes and preludes - Get a seriously tuned one, lower transmission losses, better aerodynamics, they'll be pretty damn quick and will blow away a UK turbo. As standard they're quick but using VTEC versus impreza on-boost, there won't be much in it. Catch it off boost . . . MR400 vs Fiat Stilo 1.6 on top gear anyone? Even then, preludes handle pretty nicely, so if driven well could blow away a badly driven impreza through the twisties.

Regarding the cosworth comment: having once encountered a certain Mr Rainbird in his old 2wd Sierra Cossie (IIRC, about 430bhp at the time), I don't doubt it at all - that was one seriously quick motor. I believe his present Escort Cossie is quite brisk too

To re iterate what was said up above, He could of been off boost, or how about not even interested. It`s easy to blow away an Impreza turbo, even a type 25. If the driver of the scoob doesn`t care about racing. On the subgect of cosworths I have a friend with a 2 door sierra rear wheel drive cossie. With around 350Bhp running 27psi of boost, **** it was quick, but way to much lag, went out and had a little play scoobs traction killed it from low speed. But as soon as he was able to get the power down no hope, Most distance i`d get on him would be around 200 - 300 metres before I saw him rapidly getting closer in the mirrors. So round a kart track the even a standard bugeye would win, anything else and you are in serious trouble.

27 PSI seems a little excessive for only 350 BHP.

I know and it was running awefully rich aswell at tickover. Couple of other things he wasn`t sure about, that he was changing , like ditching the rs5oo wing and putting a normal 2 door cossie wing on,getting rid of the stupid loud dump valve ( he got tired of it after about a week ). and redoing the rear suspension. All i remember was he put his foot down and it took forever for it to come on boost. Didn`t get to full boost til over 4000rpm then it just went like stink, as long as it didn`t break away at the back.

Angry

I drive an 53 STI PPP running 300bhp but some fool in a standard saab 9-3 decided to cut me up on a motorway wave me for a race then drove erratic away from me cutting up an audi a4 in the process. I'm sure the pinhead would say he beat me to his mates although I wasn't interesting in racing the fool who drove like a tw@t!
