EVO 6 will certainly outperform and outhandle an RB5 (even the WR Sport).

The newer EVO's have a harsher ride than an Impreza, but guess you have to sacrifice something for better handling.

For me it would come down to running costs (4.5K servicing, 50-litre fuel tank) and changing a 5/6 year old car for another 5/6 year old car. If you think an Impreza guzzles fuel, wait till you drive an EVO.

I was seriously considering changing from my 03 WRX Wagon with PPP, 18s, springs etc for a 99 EVO6 with stage one mods but the insurance quote was up by 40% not to mention the running costs, everyday driving issue and having to find additional funds to purchase a much older car. I do love the EVO6 though and you never know!

Tis true, inorder to keep up with a standard evo6 you'd need to get a decat dp and upgrade your suspension on a WRSPORT

Running cost are a mare

Hard to advise mate if you don't tell us what you're looking for out of the change. I will say that you should go for an extended test drive before you decide. Some people will find the EVO's ride unnacceptable for everyday use. Other's will say it's worth it for the kidney punch every time you press the loud pedal

Oh, and the Evo will be even more of a Chav magnet than the Scooby! Subtle it aint!

Best.

Considder an STi 6 as well as an EVO6, still a big jump from an RB5.

You could sell the RB5 and go to something like a V6 Type R, (elec adjustable diff) still cheaper than an EVO6.

4.5 k service change the oil yourself and get a specialist to change AYC fluid.
How does the size of the fuel tank affect running costs?

I'm quite lucky, mine hasn't attracted much of that kind of attention as of yet....maybe is something to do with the fact that I renamed our house from "Primrose cottage" to "Chav morgue"...Hmm, what do you think?

Looked into the insurance aswell for an evo6,but it was 700 quid dearer than the scoob!

It doesn't. What I meant was that he would have to fill up more frequently and that's something that put me off when I considered buying my RB5 back in '99. Running costs are scary enough without being reminded about it more than once a week

50 litres = Approx 11 gallons. If you get 15mpg that means a visit to a Shell garage every 165 miles.

I had one before my 05 STI and loved it..awesome looking but I found it annoying as a daily driver too hard and fidgety. When you want to rag the nuts of it is was brilliant, BUT 99% of the time it was a bit of a pain.

Might just be me but arent they getting a little dated looking now??

I agree with Jeremy Clarkson: looks like someone coated it in superglue and then just drove it through Halfords. Up till the EVO 6, they looked like Max power cars. IMHO The design of the 7 onwards -though criticised for being too conservative- was much more cohesive and satisfying.

I think the 6 looks tough, remember its never trying to look nice! The 7 looks horrid but the 8 is also tough IMHO.

Not sure of your budget but the 05 STI is the dogs dangly bits I was lucky enough to have the choice of it or an M3 or a new EVO and I genuinely think the Scooby has not only caught up but is the better car.

i nearly bought a new evo 6 gsr 4 years ago, was also interested in a s/h rb5 wr and a new p1, didnt go for the evo as you could only get reims blue then, didnt like the colour, insurance was £700 more than the rb5/p1 and the horrible note from a standard evo, rb5 wr was a great car, didnt seem any quicker than me my97 with a full ss system but handled whilst my my97 didnt, but it was an uncared for car, dings and scrapes all round, kerbed wheels all round, it had just come in part x against a p1, took the p1 demo out for a spin and one up a week later, luved it but sold it 18 months later as a new baby meant a need for 4 doors, bought a new prodrive sti 7, that never did much for me, chopped it in last year for what id really wanted for a while, an evo 6 rsx, had £40 back from the insurance company, what a shock, its better on petrol than the sti but not as good as the p1 was! but what a car, only downside is modding it, so addictive, was standard when i test drove it, by the time id agreed to buy it id ordered a 330 bhp upgrade and lowered springs, since had ap,s, 18's etc , bar the sound of a scoob theres no looking back

i think if you dont mind the extra running cost go for it
but on the other hand you could go for a newer car e.g. subaru sti

think if i had the cash i would go for the evo, would miss the sound of a scooby tho lol

Had my RB5 for 3 years, and have modded it a fair bit Used an Evo 6 GSR for a number of months. RB5 and Evos are completely different to drive. I HATED the AYC on the Evo, and it didn't make me go around corners fast. Infact I've played with a number of Evos and with my mods, the RB5 is quicker around the corners. Played with another Evo, in my mates RB5 over a 10 mile private road, and there was nothing in it (obviously mates RB5 had a few mods) and I really do mean nothing

Hated the attention in the Evo, and didn't like filling it up three times in one day Fuel economy is absolutely rubbish

Default In my Opinion

Ive been a Lancer Register member almost as long as I have been on SIDC and SN.

I actually wanted a 5/6 EVO when I bought my TypeR 3 years ago. Couldn't find a good one for reasonable money as you seemed to pay 99 STI money for a 98 EVO. I was only conviced to buy my own particular scooby, as it is a 'little special'

Insurance was going to be the same and the 4500 Service is only really for the GSR Diff to be retorqued, not the engine itself. You can even retorque it yourself, but it is a little fiddly. There should be some info on the LTR.

I change my Engine Oil and filter at 3000miles anyway, irrespective of the 6000mile service, so just change that yourself at 4500 and the service do it every 9000.

In my personal opinion, in the last 3 years the EVO6 agressive styling has aged a bit, certainly in relation to the tamer 7/8 generation. My friends with them (5/6's) don't seem to get the same looks as I do in the Scooby either .

The advice people have given you about driving it first is something you must consider. If you buy a car for driving, that diff will make a good driver better and a bad driver - 'Competant'.

The guys on the LTR are as friendly as they are on SN. I even went Go-Karting with the Kent owners the other day. I was the only Scooby there!.

4.5k service is only the AYC fluid for the diff costs less than £100.

Fuel tank is 40 litres btw

40 litres FFS, my mum's Ford Ka has a bigger tank

My Impreza is 7.5K or 6mths, so what's an EVO's service time?

£100 for a diff oil change. ****, what's it made of African Killer bee honey?

Stefan
