Default crankshaft oil seal problem on classic sti

had my 1996 wrx sti a week and the seal between the crankshaft and the oil pump let go. The garage i bought it from sent it to a subaru repair specialist who sorted the problem but couldn't say what caused it. I had checked the oil after it let go and it seemed to be up to the notch after loads of oil had leaked out. i know it is supposed to be upto the hole only. But every time you dipped the dipstick it gave a different reading. Could too much oil have caused the seal to let go and should i be careful when driving the car as i don't want all the oil to come out if it blows again.
Have been advised to fit an oil pressure and boost guage in the car to monitor stuff. Is this a good idea and how much could this cost?????
