like any car look at what you are getting,if it has low mileage make sure they have plenty of history, always worth paying for a car to be checked over with say AA or RAC.
4-5k will get you a nice midly modified classic, which hasnt hopefully been ragged to death.
the good thing with buying from say scoobynet, most cars have a checkable history most people know each others cars, so you can ask questions, theres a few for sale on the for sale general area at the minute, ive just seen a v nice green classic wagon for sale with nice alloys.
do plenty of shopping about mate and you will get a nice car for that amount of money.
good luck and most importantly welcome

'Bit short of cash' and 'impreza ownership' are not the best of friends when mentioned together in a conversation!
Apart from the fact that they cost a fair bit to insure and run on a daily basis, you also need to keep on top of the servicing and maintenance to ensure the vehicle doesn't cost you a fortune in the long run. I think someone somewhere had a spreadsheet of yearly running costs for an impreza, and it didn;t make for pretty reading.
Thats not to say you can;t buy and run an impreza on a budget, but go into it with your eyes open, knowing what the long term costs are.

only go down the budget route if you do all(or most)servicing yourself
ive managed to run 3 different legacy turbos over the last 4 years(all high milers with boost tweaks) for about £2000 and that includes buying 2 of them
£4-5k should just do the job though

I bought this for £5.1k last year:
http://ianjeffery.fotopic.net/c166245.html
Yes it has done 101k, but is in extremely good condition for the age - M Reg 1994. Not let me down yet apart from battery went dead over xmas - my fault, new battery bought consequently for peace of mind.
I had it inspected by the AA, and all they found was some wear on the front discs/pads so I was lucky - found a good 'un, had been very well looked after, a lot of receipts etc.
I agree with the others tho - ain't cheap to run. Servicing ain't so bad as long as you avoid main dealers. Interim oil change £70ish, full £150ish. Petrol 15-20mpg, and insurance £700 for me.
Take your time and you will get a good one. I'd imagine mine is worth £4.5k now, so it is possible.
Ask any qs you want matey, and I'll answer 'em.

Have a look at www.wrx.co.uk they seem to have a couple of nice cheap imports in from time to time. They are a quality importer but cater for both ends of the market.
(by the way i don't work for them)

DO NOT get a Scooby if you're on a budget, as Ivan Draggo said to Rocky "I must break you" That's what this car will do if you try and run it on a budget. It drinks SUL, preferably optimax, will cost you a considerable sum to insure and MUST be maintained properly i.e. no half arsed DIY. An engine re-biuld could cost as much as 4.5K if it's knackered or you don't look after it properly.
I'd get someone less high-maintenence on that budget mate.
Sorry!
Best wishes

I was a 'bit short of cash' when i got mine but only because i really wanted a P1. I was only short on the initial bulk outlay of actually buying the car but can quite comfortably afford the Insurance,Optimax, servicing etc.
I agree,if you are totally skint then don't bother, get somethng you can neglect for a few months if you have to.

You won't see a lower mileage, cleaner example for this money - well I haven't seen one

Got this way back in June from here. P reg and an STI for £5,500. You should easily get a goodun for the money you have. Only had to spend out on an oil change so far, fingers crossed for this year!

The biggest problem is that if it does need to go to the garage for something the price goes up by 50% just because its a Scoob and despite the fact that it is easy to work on. Parts can be very expensive if you don't have time to shop around. Eg lambda sensor for an early Jap WRX around £300 from the main dealer, a clutch fitted likewise will be £700. If the exhaust up-pipe cracks (as they do) thats £200+ just in labour.
