Such a thing as a good cheap scooby?
Evening everyone,
I'm thinking about dipping my toe into scooby ownership. I can afford to buy a new one if I chose to, but at the moment I'd rather pay off my mortgage.
So... keeping the other half happy by not throwing too much money away on an older car, budget circa £5000 - £7000 it is possible to purchase a "good one". i.e. turbo, no crash damage, not thrashed to an inch of it's life.
Is it worth it? Has anyone done it? Or, is it false economy and not really worth the hassle? Or am I setting my sights far to high for the money....
I would appreciate people comments and views.
Thanks
Chive.

If you want a good, honest one then there are some rules to abide by:-
1. Buy a proper UK car and get the History
2. As few owners as possible - 1 owner is a bonus
3. The ONLY mod you would want to see on it is an aftermarket backbox
4. Full Service History .... and I mean FULL!! (this rules out an Import)
5. Try and talk to the owner (difficult if its at a garage) - but, is he/she a Roy Bacer? (walk away!)
6. Think about a Wagon, this will be the best chance of securing a genuine, unthrashed, unmodded, one owner cherished car!
7. Buy a Blue one (for re-sale reasons) - avoid the MicaPink like the plague!
8. If it has Gold Wheels, factor in the cost of proper wheels

OK, Buy an Import ................ but get a damned good discount - remember they paid 1/2 the price of a proper UK one!!

No neeeeeed. Why do you have to be so confrontational? (probable spelling error). You give loads but have a problem when someone gives it back.

Tell you what, to ease the pain, just observe for a month or two - watch what happens, how the keyboard duels are played out ...... you are clearly out of your depth!!
Theres a good chap

Yes its an import, yes its service history is up to date. This UK only with full history = trouble free motoring is a very blinkered view. There are good imports and UK, also dogs of imports and UK.
Another view would be that the early JDM's are the pick of the bunch - only when they got popular and ramped up production for EU did problems arise

Chive, there are plenty of honest cars out there, including imports. Take mine for example, brought in and registered when new in 1998, mine for the last 5 years (and more). Reasonable price

Lewis points are ok and pretty much the way youd buy any car. However even uk cars go wrong......maf failure 97,98.cars etc . A low mileage one uk owner or personal import 96ish wrx or pref sti is way better value - specwise .(if its had bigger brakes put on ...) ..... reading on here last couple o years - a larger % of blows ups seem to be uk cars). But of cause its the temptation to modify that is the killer.......that is why an sti is best way to go - quite enuff power to start with and forged internals.. etc. Youll get an old sti cheaper and less mileage than a 5 year newer 'english' one ( which incidently probably wont be a 1 owner at this stage - and wont have a warrenty either)
