Question MY03 WRX - Mods advice & views please?

Hi All,

Having thoroughly enjoyed my first three months of Scoob ownership, I now feel a need to change a few things around a bit.

I'm thinking of doing some mods to the car, be it cosmetic, aural (not stereo-wise!) or performance. I am thinking more cosmetic (interior or exterior, though preferably interior) or aural rather than performance.
As it's my daily shopping / work car, I don't want to do anything silly to it and I don't want to spend heaps on it (I have other toys which really need my hard earned spent on them much more!).

So, what can I do in £25 increments from £25 > £300 thats would make things a little better or different..??

Go......

Nige.

PS: I've already swapped the stereo for an aftermarket one.

change the back box? Meatier sound, but may be a bit too boy-racerish for some

200-300 quid?

It will also not invalidate your warranty

New alloy gear **** - £50.00 and makes all the difference.

Improves the handling and performance by at least 10% - allegedly

Seriously though - was one of the first things I changed from that horrible leather one..

If you can save up and get PPP though I'd very much recommend it..

Yep,
Back box and gear ****, they were two things I was considering. Must also keep warranty intact for the time being. PPP would be nice, but I've got too much cash going into my other car at the mo for that to happen this year. Maybe next year though...

So what back box is throaty and deep, not booming, keeps warranty, not too loud ( I work shifts and my neighbours don't) and is sensibly priced?

What gearknobs are around? Those prodrive ones look a bit naff... are they or are they better than I think?

Any other suggestions?

Ta,
Nige.

I got the prodrive one and I really like it - very well made and feels great in the hand, just screwed on as a direct replacement as well..

Cool hhmmm...

lol..sounds like dejavu, I've also got a MY03 Blue WRX and was in the same boat as you last year.
Well i bought a solid, machined aliminium shifter **** from a US website called Kartboy and it screwed straight on in place of the original one. Great and a bit more solid and original than the prodrive jobbie.
Then i added a set of mudflaps in blue, again very nice cosmetic touch...
But then it all unfortunately went a bit wrong..lol..I went for the full decat and remap by Xtreme scoobies...wow - by far and away the best £1500 i've ever spent - it made a massive difference. After the engine work i then added a set of Redstuff ceramic pads (the new ones - NOT the old compound) - again a great improvement.
Last but not least I took the car too a local bodyshop and had the new Subaru bodykit fitted - Front spoiler and bumper arrangement, thicker side skirts, rear under spoiler and finally a rear STi7 spoiler from MR added for the final touch. Unfortunatly this little lot supply and fit cost around £2k.
So there you go...lol..yes i know some of those mods were a fraction over your £25 - £300 bracket but well, what can you do ...it now looks and goes like it should !..lol.

And Ninja back box for me with non resonating centre section for a bit more noise!!!

If you had the budget I would have said, drop your engine out and replace with a 4G63.
but
Possibly uprated panel filter and spend the change on other things

I was told that a replacement back box would need to be an approved one ie Prodrive or it WOULD affect warranty. Apparently any mod that improves performance theoretically could cause more wear on the engine/ drivetrain.
Also, don't forget that you need to inform insurance co. Privilege wanted an extra £100 per annum if I added a WR Sport backbox!

In theory, I suppose you're on dodgy ground with the warranty if you change the back box, but having said that:

I've talked to the garage on several occassions about it, and they keep telling me that as long as it is just the back box, there shouldn't be any warranty problems. Then again, I have (touch wood) not had to claim on my warranty so far, so don't know what would happen if I did have a gearbox problem etc.

Also, insurance companies differ in the mods department.

E.g. Tesco charged us 300 quid on-top for a year with a backbox (2% performance gain?), where as Diamond (whom we are with now) were free, even though we said "It's a performance mod!" on several occasions and it's down on the certificate.
