New Impreza info

More info from this weeks Autocar.
Blue car photgraphed still with MY98 wheels.
First photos of the interior which looks a good deal nicer with aluminium surrounds on the dash and even a hint of 'style' about it. Can't see Bright button for its fans.
Info in the article states the UK turbo car will be called the WRX and cost £23,000.
Power in Japan is up to 247bhp (Torque up from 214lb ft to 246lb ft at 3,600rpm)though there is fears that emission controls could strangle that figure for the UK. Japan reported to be working on hot models with up to 350bhp.
Standard turbo will NOT have the 6sp gearbox though a 4 speed Tiptronic style autobox with rocker switches on the steering wheel will follow later.
Performance predictable at 150mph top speed with 0-60 a shade over 5 seconds. Special attention has been made to improve the braking.
Seeparately in the magazine the SIDC gets little promo piece.

Sounds like good news. Better performance, and better brakes.
Pity about the headlamp design, but if they work in the dark like the current ones don't, then the trade off against looks has got to be worth it.
I must admit, that having seen lots of photos of the new car, it is actually starting to grow on me. I'll probably like it in a few years time

I read an interview with someone on the Chrysler Viper team. He reckoned the car only needed three gears because the power & torque band was so wide, but the market demanded a six-gear box.
I guess there might also be an advantage in being able to make fewer gear-shifts when accelerating, so you can keep the turbo on boost. Although, why put it with a tiptronic, which makes quicker shifts, something that a 6-gear turbo would need?
