Default Coming back to Scoobyville, advice please

I had a UK MY 99 for 2 years, it went from a standard 215hp straight from Subaru for £15,000, I then proceeded to spent circa £10,000 on it and ended up with just over 300hp and lots of bills for broken bits and insurance premiums.

I then bought a brand new Fabia VRS for £12,000 and sold the scooby to a VERY happy new owner for £7,000 just to get rid of it quickly.

So the lesson I learnt was that I modded beyond my means, I dont think these cars are out of my price range to own but they are if I intend on spending money modding them.

SOOOOO....

...Do I buy a STI 5 this time for around £10k, pay the £1500 insurance and leave the thing alone and be happy driving it in standard form with its 280hp OR buy another UK MY99 for £6000-£7000, decat and remap it to circa 260hp, pay the £1200 insurance and be happy driving that instead?

My previous scoob never stayed at 260hp for long so I really cant remember how quick it was, and i've never driven a STI 5 so i dont know what i'm missing.

The difference if nothing goes wrong for first year cost of ownership (excluding petrol) between the two options is £2300, which would save me enough to fix most minor engine and other problems or pay another years insurance, but it would leave me with a car which would only be on par with your average hot hatch.

I just dont know, so i'm throwing this one out for opinions, my heart says STI 5 but my head says play it cool and make sure I can afford to keep the car and buy the cheaper one as there are some bargains to be had with UK 99's atm.

Good bargain classic + PPP?

Surely standard classic performs somewhat better than the 'average' hot hatch. Civic 'R' & Mini works may be pretty quick - but IMHO both well above average cars. Now in the wet...

So one vote for a classic :0

Oops I thnk I meant top end hot hatch clearly average hot hatch wouldnt include the "exotic" hot hatches

But, i'm not going to get into the classic performance argument, i've owned a standard 215hp classic, which went to 240, to 265 to 300 and beyond so I know what compares to what from my own experiences

Yeah but its a pre 99 car and the bumper just dont appeal to me, plus I think the standard 97 wrx is about 250hp on 100RON.

But agreed, its kind of a middle ground, for sure quicker than a standard UK 99 without the price tag of an STI 5!

Maybe i'll just go for a stripped out crazy type ra v2-3 or something

argh decisions

Did the same with my previous 215bhp MY00 classic, spent loads on it and tuned it to over 300+bhp with new turbo, intercooler, injectors etc, but you cant use it on public roads anyway, I like the odd race etc, but with to much power you just dont need it, Now I have a MY04 WRX, Im not going to get to stupid on the engine mods, I think ill be happy with just a full decat and Ecutek remap, as long as I can see off Clio sports, and Civic Type R's than ill be happy, but to be honest a standard scoob could do that. I would rather go for reliability over power now.

I've had a MY99 since it was new and in 2003 i added the PPP (albeit not official) and although more power would be nice i think the 250 bhp it managed still with the downpipe cat is enough for me and the driving i do
But of course it's always a case of you pays your money etc etc
Always fancied a classic STI Wagon though LOL
Sh1te got me thinking now
