Default I'm having a crisis!

Day off on Friday and was burbling past the local Mitsi dealer in my STi PPP and thought WTF so I went in. Always been curious about Evo's and been a passenger in quite a few on track and road. They had a 260 demo and I took a test. Good grief! It's a flying machine. Superb handling and corners like a dream. Much less roll than mine and sticks to the tar like glue. The acceleration is phenomenal. Never mind being a competitor for the WRX, I reckon this car could take my STi. Arranging to test the MR 340 next week. What AM I doing? The last time I behaved like this I bought the STi. Please help. Tell me some stuff that will banish these evil (Evo?) thoughts.

You don't need help If you want it, have it! I know another guy from here did exactly the same thing and hasn't looked back. They are beautiful cars and the handling was superb. The only thing lacking was the noise

Ask the dealer how often they have to replace the clutch/gearbox? That should put you off

The evo 9 comes out in the next couple of months or so, so.

1. The price of the evo 8 will drop, so a bit of Depreciation to be expected.
2. You'll be left with the old shape evo.
3. Insurance is a nightmare (well for everytime I try anyway)

Thats all I can think off, Great car though. Not exactly going to put you off, if you really want it though.

Im 22, and everytime I try to get insured on a evo, they always come back between 4k-6k insurance and thats on my dads name. I only pay £800 on a new WRX, and a P1 would only cost me £900.

Looks like ill never get to own a evo.

Servicing, isnt it every 4500 miles and I've been informed they chew up clutches like nobodys business, straight from a mechanic who works for them.

If you buy a 260 everyone on the MLR will ridicule you (even though its a better car than most of theirs...)

Clutches are fine unless you abuse them. Do not traffic light grand prix an Evo!!

Servicing is every 4500 miles or 6 months, however the 8 currently has a free servicing offer.

The MR340 is a very nice bit of kit especially with the leather seats, however the best option is generally regarded as a 300 with decat. A mitsi garage will happily decat it for you.

The standard HKS exhaust is as nice as anything Subaru have, generally less intrusive, and more of a howl than a burble.

Wouldn't recommend the 260, nothing wrong with the car but market is flooded with second hand ones bought as Vectra replacements, until they see the bills. The MR\FQ range will be more sought after by the enthusiasts.

Car is slightly roomier than an Impreza, no 3rd point shoulder belt or Isofix(260 does though).

260 is 5 speed box from Evo 7, 8 has standard 6 speed.

Speedo is impossible to read on the FQ\MR cars, so buy a road angel or similar for backup.

Evo is less common, a few more admiring glances from adolescent boys than the Scoob.

Insurance a little more expensive than an Sti, but easier to get than an STiPPP as it is standard.

Evo 9 due very soon, discounts to be had on an 8, at least down to 26k for the 300.

Evo 10 due in 2007, rumoured to be completely new car.

MLR - www.lancerregister.com or the more friendly www.lancer-evo.net for more info.

listen to Matt w he knows what he's talking about!!!! i find that evo's turn more heads! are u a poser? the evo will actually be no quicker than the subaru(depending on fq300,320,340.your ppp etc) i tested new evo fq300 and found it to have ore lag, the handling was the same and i didnt like the 6speed gearbox. the clutch rumors are true and if you give it alot of abuse then be prepared to pay for an uprated one pretty soon. if money no object i might get an evo fq340 but if i had the cash i'd keep yours and make it unique and quicker than the evo!

Thumbs up

any evo except the 400.

Terrible- either lots of turbo lag or totally out of control and too fast.

Mitsibushi have got the new one wrong.

Thanks folks for all the info esp MattW . I think that it would depend on the deal. I need to find out a bit more about the plus/minus points of the 300/320/340. I just downloaded the Evo buyers guide from the MLR so this should help the dillema a bit. I wont be considering the 260. If I'm going to do this and take depreciation on the chin then it will be a 340. I am also considering the mahoosive mod option on my own car especially after following Graham's (911) thread in Projects and the magic touch of AndyF. The one thing I would miss is the burble however I was extremely tickled by the hard ride of the Evo (lets face it, when is the offer of a hard ride not to be considered seriously ). I'm an old bugger at 41 so I have reasonable relationships with insurance companies. I'm going to try the 340 next week so this may either soothe or make my feet itchier! Thanks folks and any other words of wisdom or personal experieces are welcomed.
H.

Am I the only person who doesn't rate the ride/handling of the Evo 340 which was the one I tried along with the Exige 2 which was great but underpowered and eventually got the Type 25.

There like that even if you had a FQ400, even that seems to get slated on MLR, They seem to think the Evo 6 is the only true evo.

Can any one tell me about the ECU systems on the MR series of Evo's? I read somewhere that the 340 has a piggyback chip. Don't like the sound of that. Can anyone point me in the direction of further info on this. I know I should really be asking on MLR but I know this place better (and am risking a shift of this thread to 'Other Marques!)

I'm sure they do but just trying to educate myself a bit more. Maybe I'll get this out of my system and all will be well with the STi. It's a bit like (I would imagine) being in a stable relationship and Kylie walks in and asks for a sh@g! You missed a corner by the way Bubba!!!

This is true. Frowned upon if you want to mod the car because you have to remove the piggyback which takes it back to a 320. The chip is a Unichip, loads of stuff on the MLR about it.

I went from MY03 STI to MR FQ320, with the optional 340 upgrade. The power is instant from low down the rev range, I really do think it`s everything the scoob should have been.

The interior is just as good as the scoob and everything else is better! I went the secondhand route buying one of a MLR member which is a July04 with 9k on the clock. Got a bargin considering the price he paid was £31,500.

Pictures don`t do them justice they look so much better in the flesh
